Job description

Southall is a premier destination bringing nature, produce and people together in a powerful and unique way. The Farm Manager oversees the Farm Cultivation Team, which operates a 2-acre vegetable operation and four acres of apple and berry orchards, as well as producing pasture-raised eggs, chickens, turkeys and ducks. The food produced supplies our onsite restaurants, events and retail outlets, and is grown using organic and regenerative methods.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build, develop and manage the Farm Team to further Southalls purpose, to provide seed-to-fork dining using rare, farm-grown, high-integrity ingredients, elevate nature as nourishment and enable the Southall guest to see that the land is the luxury
  • Define Farm Team roles and accountabilities
  • Hire, onboard and lead the training of Farm Team Members, ensuring all are highly engaged and retained
  • Set long-term direction and short-term priorities for Farm Team to work towards
  • Ensure the ecology in farm areas is improving in richness and health every year
  • Coordinate the allocation of labor between different farm areas on a weekly basis
  • Design and implement systems that ensure the Culinary Team receives produce of the highest quality, in the right quantities and at the right time,
  • Inspect all farm spaces to ensure they are guest-ready, Sensory-rich and educational
  • Define and manage the relationship of the Farm Team to other departments
  • Monitor and promote the collective spirit and morale of the Farm Team

Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience within the fields of organic/biodynamic farm management
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience on market garden style farming operation
  • Experience with operating tractors and other farming equipment with strong knowledge of equipment use and safety
  • Outstanding and proven skills in managing diverse teams with maximized productivity and efficiency
  • Passion for interacting with and educating guests, visitors and staff of varied ages and backgrounds
  • Ability to be open and flexible to new ways of working with diverse communities
  • Passion for sustainable, regenerative and/or biodynamic farming
  • Cooperative, service-oriented attitude and ability to work independently and take initiative, set priorities and see projects through to completion
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship development skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on a variety of tasks along with an ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, team environment
  • A valid drivers license and clean record

Education & Knowledge

  • Experience in a hospitality environment
  • Certification and/or degree in sustainable agriculture education or related field
