Job description

The Senior Portfolio Credit Analyst position will be responsible for managing, servicing, and decisioning credit actions on Farmer Mac’s agricultural loan portfolios in the Farm & Ranch Loan Purchase and Purchase Commitment programs.

Responsibilities will primarily include working with Farmer Mac Servicers on requests common to agricultural loan portfolios; analyzing distressed loans to determine risk and obtain best return outcomes; monitoring portfolio credit quality and ensuring risk ratings are appropriate.

Who You Will Work With

The Senior Portfolio Credit Analyst will work with and report to the Director - Credit Risk Farm & Ranch and collaborate with other Credit team members from across the country. The individual will also work directly with members from Accounting, Servicing, Legal, Finance, Underwriting, and Business Development.

Where You Will Work

Farmer Mac has a Presence with Purpose work environment, which allows for flexibility of work location while providing the opportunity for teams to come together in the office with purpose. Work can be conducted in a hybrid or fully remote environment within business hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Work outside of these times may be required for planned and unplanned activities to complete time-sensitive projects or to attend off-site meetings or events. The role requires minimal travel.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist with the management of Farmer Mac’s agricultural production credit portfolio.
  • Analyze and approve or recommend actions on credit requests for existing loans.
  • Ability and desire to analyze distressed credits and approve or recommend restructuring and collection actions, risk rating changes, and alternative resolutions.
  • Review and analyze updated financials and collateral inspections on portfolio loans.
  • Track and report upon various credit portfolio items such as state, regional, commodity, delinquency, and substandard loan trends.
  • Provide a high level of customer service and responsiveness to the institutions using Farmer Mac loan programs.
  • Monitor Servicers’ adherence to portfolio credit guidelines established in the Seller/Servicer Guide.
  • Work with the Appraisal & Collateral Valuation team to review the adequacy of evaluations to ensure adherence to Farmer Mac collateral valuation practices.
  • Evaluate loan portfolio data to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • Meet other needs of the Credit Team as assigned.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Sound knowledge of agricultural real estate lending
  • Strong background in credit analysis and underwriting of agricultural loans
  • Comfortable reviewing and analyzing agricultural appraisals and evaluations
  • Knowledge of database management to the extent that the data can be used to generate reports that assist with managerial decisions
  • Thorough understanding of mortgage lending best practices and procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with Farmer Mac staff and clients
  • Proficiency in operating in a computerized office environment, with solid ability in all MS Office applications, especially focused on PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Power BI, and Copilot
  • Familiarity with and ability to become proficient with Farmer Mac’s online loan origination and servicing platforms and applications
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work on one or more tasks efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, business, finance, accounting, or similar discipline.
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of experience in agricultural lending with a strong knowledge of portfolio management of agricultural mortgages.
  • Strong familiarity with loan underwriting, appraisal, real estate title, and law relating to agricultural real estate loans.

The typical starting salary range for this position is between $80,000-95,000, although wages can vary based on experience and geography.
