Description:

Woerner Agribusiness ("Woerner Turf") is looking to hire a dedicated and highly motivated individual, Harvest (Farm) Manager who will oversee supervising the daily operations and production of our sod farm in Baldwin County, AL at the direction of the Head of Agribusiness Operations for Alabama.

Requirements:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  • Oversee the following areas of sod production on the farm: Planting, Irrigation, Mowing, Fertilizer & Chemical applications, Harvesting, and Maintenance.
  • Plan (with the Head of Agribusiness Operations) what varieties of sod will be grown, how many acres of each variety, and where each variety will be planted. The harvest supervisor will then carry out those plans to completion.
  • Manage the farm employees and assign specific work duties as necessary.
  • Operate machinery as needed, and train other employees on machinery to ensure efficiency of the farm operations.
  • Monitor maintenance and repairs of all farm equipment and provide for the availability of spare parts. The harvest supervisor will oversee scheduling and coordination of all maintenance and repairs of all equipment on site.
  • Authorize purchases of farm inputs through the established Purchase Order system and sign P.O.โ€™s authorizing them for payment by Accounts Payable, within the guidelines set up with the Head of Agribusiness Operations as to dollar amounts.
  • Report updated sod inventory information, allocated fertilizer and chemical cost, harvest reports, etc. to accounting monthly.
  • Maintain a neat overall appearance on the farm as to roads, roadsides, buildings, equipment, etc.
  • Oversee compliance with all corporate safety guidelines, general guidelines, OSHA, EPA, Dept of Labor, etc. requirements.
  • Communicate with Outlet Stores, and the Farm Sales department daily regarding quantities of each variety of sod available for harvest, harvest capabilities due to weather or other events, sod quality, etc.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Skills

  • Agriculture/Farming Experience
  • Able to professionally manage people. May include directing a team of up to 15 people every day, Monday thru Friday.
  • Must have experience with equipment including the following: maintenance, basic repairs, operation of different kinds of heavy machines, safety standards of equipment, preventative maintenance and measures to eliminate down time of equipment and ensure longevity.
  • Has a positive attitude and works well under pressure.

Qualifications: Combined experience and formal education are desirable. Experience in Farm Management or a supervisory role is essential. Ability to effectively communicate and accomplish day-to-day operational tasks. Develop employees into a working team to accomplish the task of running a successful farm operation.

Physical Demands:

  • Moving about the farm and inspecting the operations
  • Operating several different pieces of large equipment to accomplish daily tasks, including but not limited to, driving tractors, forklifts, feeding planters, etc.
  • Assisting an employee in understanding and operating his equipment by instruction or example
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving items.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Setting up and adjusting equipment in the field.
  • Some mechanical duties will be required to repair and maintain the equipment.
  • The Harvest Supervisor is expected to work long hours to ensure all daily tasks are accomplished and everything is running properly before workday ends.

Work Environment: The work environment is primarily outdoor field responsibilities with occasional indoor administrative responsibilities.
