Position Title: Equestrian Farm Laborer Department: Scots Ridge Farm

Title of Immediate Supervisor/Leader to Whom This Position Reports: Farm Crew Leader

*Expected Daily Work Hours: *Shift Times May Vary *Expected Weekly Work Schedule: *Shift Days May Vary

* College offices are normally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. However, due to the nature of responsibility to the student body, individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Non-exempt employees will normally work 8 hours per day.Overtime (any hours more than 40 per week) for non-exempt employees is required to be approved, in advance by the department supervisor. Exempt employees will typically work at least 40 hours per week and such additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description. Such additional work may include evenings and weekends and should be described in this document.

Summary of this position:

Provides excellent care for the horses at the Maryville College Scots Ridge Farm, a 98-acre boarding, show barn and equestrian training facility. This position must be an effective and positive communicator, capable of communicating with board clients, students, parents and guests, and managers in a respectful, courteous, and professional manner.

Minimum Qualifications Required: (please be specific and respond to every question; indicate none if not applicable)

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Experience with farm/landscape operations and machinery

Special skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in horse related care and stabling needs.

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • Ability to attain a Tennessee Driver's license and reliable transportation is required.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate all areas of the farm - move between buildings, climb stairs, walk long distances over uneven ground, climb in and out of large farm equipment, stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work a varied shift that may include before and after hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Stamina for the physical demands of supervising horse care and oversight of large equine facility
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands to operate tools or controls, reach arms above head. Also stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Vision (close, distance, color, peripheral) as well as depth-perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing - must be able to listen to surroundings for personal and animal safety.
  • Equestrian - able to mount and dismount, ride all manner of horses, handle unexpected situations under-saddle and on the ground.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move 50 pounds regularly and without assistance.

Environmental conditions:

  • This position is an essential employee for inclement weather events and will be required to report for duty in adverse weather conditions when the College is closed. The position also is required to report on time in situations when the College is on a delayed start and is required to continue working when the College is released early.
  • Outdoors and in the barns
  • Exposure to cold and heat; humid and wet conditions; other weather
  • Ground surfaces include dirt, mud, gravel, sand, concrete, snow/ice.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts and potentially infectious materials.
  • Moderate noise level - machinery, fans.

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Ability to use tractors, mowers, spreaders, small engines, ATVs, graders, and hand tools.

Primary duties and responsibilities (Typically ~7 primary duties comprised of 80% of the responsibilities):

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.Regular and predictable attendance is essential. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Assists as directed with complete horse care to include stall cleaning, paddock care, and distributing hay, feeding, watering, and providing appropriate turnout and blanketing for horses according to the posted feed and turnout charts. Reports changes in horse condition (lameness, illness, weight gain/loss and off feed) to Farm Crew Leader.
  • Identifies, reports to Farm Crew Leader, and remediates safety issues involving horses, people, and equipment.
  • Intervenes in situations as needed to ensure that all horses are safe, clean, healthy, and as stress free as possible.
  • Administers medications and provides necessary first aid and basic medical treatments as prescribed.
  • Retrieve horses from pastures, paddocks or stalls and hold horses for veterinarian or farrier if needed.
  • Uses all farm equipment in a safe manner including tractors, ATVs, mowers, spreaders, graders and small tools.
  • Reports need for repair of equipment such as tractors, mowers, spreaders, and small engines to Farm Crew Leader.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Scots Ridge team members and customers.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students.
