Farm Internships information

What should I expect in terms of daily tasks and learning opportunities during a farm internship?

During a farm internship, your daily responsibilities may include planting, harvesting, watering, weeding, and assisting with livestock care, depending on the type of farm. You'll also have the chance to learn about sustainable agriculture practices, farm management, and possibly participate in farmers' markets or CSA programs. Interns often work closely with experienced farmers and other interns, fostering a collaborative environment where questions and hands-on learning are encouraged. Be prepared for physically demanding work, variable weather, and early start times, but also expect a supportive atmosphere focused on skill-building and personal growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a farm intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Farm Intern, you need basic agricultural knowledge, a willingness to learn, and physical stamina, with no formal qualifications typically required. Familiarity with farm tools, machinery, and sometimes basic record-keeping systems or sustainable farming certifications can be beneficial. Strong work ethic, adaptability, and effective communication help interns work well in teams and respond to changing farm needs. These skills are crucial for ensuring productive, safe, and efficient operations while gaining hands-on experience in agriculture.

What is a farm internship?

Farm internships are structured work experiences on farms where individuals, often students or aspiring farmers, learn about agricultural practices firsthand. These internships typically involve hands-on tasks such as planting, harvesting, animal care, and equipment maintenance. They are designed to provide practical skills, an understanding of sustainable farming methods, and insight into daily farm operations. Farm internships can vary in length and may include room, board, and sometimes a stipend. They are valuable for those interested in pursuing a career in agriculture or sustainable food systems.

Job description

Company Description

Many Fold Farm is a family owned operation. The farm is located in the beautiful Chattahoochee Hill Country, about 50-minutes west-southwest of Atlanta, GA. We are proud to be a part of a burgeoning agricultural economy within a community that seeks to preserve our rural heritage and act as a model for growth that is an antidote to urban sprawl.
On our farm you'll find a small cadre of farmers, family members, interns, volunteers, and employees all attending to the daily needs of sheep, cows, chickens, hogs, and dogs happily living on pasture as nature intended. We raise our animals on a grass based system and consider ourselves "grassfarmers" who practice management-intensive grazing to ensure healthy pastures and healthy animals.
