As a fantasy writer, your job is to write material for movies, books, comics, TV, or other mediums. The definition of fantasy varies, but the word usually refers to any storyline or fictional area that contains unrealistic material, magic, or elements of mythology. This is sharply distinct from science fiction, which explicitly uses something that at least resembles science and technological development rather than a largely-unexplainable power. Some jobs for fantasy writers involve working with larger teams to create products instead of creating material independently. This may require working with pre-established rules for a setting, such as limitations on what magic or magical characters can do. Many fantasy writers start by becoming independent authors.
| Aspect | Fantasy Writer | Copywriter |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Creative writing skills, storytelling ability, often a degree in English, Creative Writing, or related fields | Marketing or advertising knowledge, strong writing skills, often a degree in Marketing, Communications, or related fields |
| Work Environment | Fiction publishing, freelance projects, creative agencies, or personal projects | Advertising agencies, marketing departments, freelance marketing content creation |
| Industry Usage | Literature, entertainment, publishing | Advertising, marketing, e-commerce |
While both Fantasy Writers and Copywriters require strong writing skills, Fantasy Writers focus on creating imaginative stories and worlds for entertainment, often working in publishing or entertainment industries. Copywriters craft persuasive content aimed at marketing and advertising, typically working within corporate or agency settings. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the writing industry.
