Job description

Strategic Marketing & Fan Engagement Intern:
The University of Virginia Athletics Department is seeking Strategic Marketing & Fan Engagement Interns to assist in creating memorable game-day experiences and driving attendance across UVA's 27 varsity sports programs. Interns will gain hands-on experience in sports marketing, event operations, fan engagement, and sponsorship activation while working alongside full-time athletics staff.
UVA Athletics has won more than 35 NCAA Division I National Championships and welcomes thousands of fans to athletic events each year. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the nation's premier collegiate athletics programs.
Time Commitment:
This position requires approximately 6-10 hours per week; primarily during athletic events on nights and weekends. Additional office hours and special project opportunities may be available based on performance and departmental needs.
Responsibilities:
  • Execute game-day promotions, giveaways, contests, and fan engagement activities.
  • Assist with sponsorship activations and in-venue entertainment elements.
  • Support event setup, breakdown, and operational logistics.
  • Interact with fans to create a welcoming and engaging game-day atmosphere.
  • Assist with special events, student outreach initiatives, and community engagement opportunities.
  • Support the Sabre Rewards program and student attendance efforts.
  • Help develop and implement marketing plans designed to increase attendance and enhance the fan experience.
  • Create game scripts, run-of-show documents, and event timelines.
  • Brainstorm and develop creative content, promotional concepts, and fan engagement features.
  • Collaborate with athletics staff, student groups, spirit squads, and campus partners to promote events and drive attendance.

Position Compensation: $13.00 Hourly.
Undergrad student wage position for less than 20 hours per week.
Required Qualifications:
  • Resume and Cover Letter required.
  • Full-time student currently enrolled at the University of Virginia (graduate and undergraduate).
  • Availability to attend all home football games and select competitions for other sports, which are frequently scheduled during evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to represent the University of Virginia and UVA Athletics in a positive, professional, and customer-service-oriented manner.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and adapt in a fast-paced live event environment.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Genuine interest in pursuing a career in sports marketing, fan engagement, event management, or collegiate athletics.
  • Previous experience in customer service, event operations, marketing, promotions, or athletics.
  • Creative mindset with a willingness to contribute new ideas for fan engagement and game presentation.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and current fan engagement trends.

Physical Demands:
Event preparation and operations may require occasional light physical labor. This includes carrying supplies to, from, and throughout athletic venues. Interns may be required to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods, including up to four hours at a time during athletic events.
