The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary team of engineers, computer scientists, applied mathematicians, and computational scientists to develop next-generation computational methods, publish in leading journals and conferences, mentor graduate students, and contribute to major federally funded research initiatives.
  • Develop next-generation numerical methods for computational solid mechanics.
  • Design and implement robust finite element algorithms for nonlinear mechanics problems.
  • Develop AI-enabled acceleration strategies for nonlinear finite element analysis and large-scale computational mechanics.
  • Develop novel iterative solvers, multigrid methods, Krylov subspace algorithms, learned preconditioners, and nonlinear solution strategies for large-scale mechanics problems.
  • Develop scalable computational algorithms for large-scale engineering and biomedical simulations
  • Advance the state of the art in computational solid mechanics, scientific computing, numerical linear algebra, and scientific machine learning.
  • Conduct large-scale computational simulations and analyze numerical results.
  • Publish research in leading journals and conferences in computational mechanics, scientific computing, applied mathematics, and computational engineering.
  • Collaborate with researchers across engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, and biomedical engineering.
  • Contribute to competitive research proposals to federal agencies and private foundations.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Qualifications
Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong background in computational solid mechanics, finite element methods, scientific computing, numerical methods, or computer graphics.
  • Excellent programming skills in C/C++ and Python, with experience developing large-scale scientific software.
  • Experience with object-oriented software development and modern software engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly publications in high-quality conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research environments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with nonlinear finite element methods and computational mechanics.
  • Experience with iterative solvers, multigrid methods, Krylov subspace methods, preconditioning techniques, and nonlinear solution algorithms.
  • Experience developing scientific machine learning, AI-based acceleration techniques, or learned numerical methods for computational mechanics.
  • Experience with reduced-order modeling, multiscale methods, uncertainty quantification, or high-performance scientific computing.
  • Experience developing computational simulation, visualization, or interactive software systems.
  • Experience mentoring graduate or undergraduate researchers.

Our research spans computational mechanics, scientific computing, computer graphics, machine learning, computational modeling, and quantum computing, with an emphasis on developing transformative computational technologies with real-world impact.
Our research focuses on nonlinear computational solid mechanics, finite element methods, scientific machine learning, iterative and nonlinear solvers, multigrid methods, Krylov subspace methods, reduced-order modeling, multiscale modeling, and high-performance scientific computing. We are particularly interested in developing AI-enabled acceleration strategies that improve the convergence, efficiency, robustness, and scalability of numerical algorithms for large-scale nonlinear mechanics problems.
