Our mission spans four critical national security areas nuclear deterrence, threat preparedness, energy security, and multi-domain defense empowering teams to take on the toughest challenges of today and tomorrow. With a culture built on innovation and operational excellence, LLNL is a place where your expertise can make a real impact.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Facility Engineer to provide engineering support for new construction, upgrades to facility systems (i.e., building structure, ventilation, fire suppression, compressed gas, piping, and pipe supports), design review, and modifications to conventional office and laboratory facilities. You will apply advanced technical knowledge in project management and system engineering to develop conceptual ideas into workable and cost-effective solutions that maintain facilities supporting treatment and storage of radioactive and hazardous waste. This position supports the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management Program in the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
  • Prepare and implement designs utilizing design criteria, calculations, schematics, sketches, construction documents, procedures, and specifications.
  • Utilize technical engineering skills to develop detailed designs, drawings, calculations, bills of materials, presentations, and work planning documentation to support facility improvement projects including evaluating system capacities, planning sequencing of work, and ensuring feasibility.
  • Determine functional mechanical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems and perform advanced mechanical engineering calculations for ventilation, fire protection, cryogenic or gas systems, chillers, or boilers as needed.
  • Provide engineering support during construction performed by outside contractors including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, or resolving field problems.
  • Participate in design reviews to obtain approvals of project scope and designs.
  • Maintain facility configuration management program by submitting/reviewing change requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level
  • Lead complex internal multi-disciplinary engineering projects as the Project Lead or Design Manager with overall responsibility for developing technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Provide technical input to others on complex design requirements and identify and evaluate potential system impacts for projects affecting facility systems while complying with LLNL procedures, work control system processes, and DOE requirements.
  • Lead internal projects with responsibility for the development and compliance with technical criteria, schedules, and deliverables.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Industrial, or System Engineering or related scientific/engineering field, or equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
  • Comprehensive experience and knowledge in the design of facility-related systems and components such as ventilation systems and associated controls, liquid processing systems, fire protection systems, chilled water systems, or boiler systems.
  • Comprehensive experience developing project scope, evaluating design options, determining design criteria, and preparing and reviewing design and construction specifications, calculations, and drawings that support efficient and successful job completion in industrial facility environments.
  • Working knowledge and use of applicable codes and industry standards - i.e., ASME, California Building Code, Uniform Building Code, ASHRAE.
  • Comprehensive experience generating correspondence, reports, calculations, and presentations using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applicable software.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively interact and collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information.
  • Ability and flexibility to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level
  • Advanced experience as Project Lead or Design Manager of complex multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
  • Advanced experience in facility engineering and industry code compliance.
  • Experience in high hazard facility (i.e., nuclear/radiological, chemical, hazardous waste facility).
  • Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management, reviewers, and stakeholders.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience at a DOE, U.S. Navy, or commercial nuclear facilities performing engineering support or operations.
  • Professional Engineering or Engineer in Training Registration in Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering in California or reciprocity from another state within twelve months.
  • Experience in radioactive waste management including the design of waste treatment systems and storage facilities.
  • Significant experience with systems and infrastructure for ventilation systems and the ability to read and develop control system schematics.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

$129,150 - $163,764 Annually for the TSS.2 level
$154,950 - $196,476 Annually for the TSS.3 level
