What is a facilities engineer?

A facilities engineer oversees the design process of buildings and the systems therein. A typical job for a facilities engineer is the design of industrial and manufacturing plants. As a facilities engineer, your responsibilities revolve around the production of blueprints and models using a drafting program. While you are often responsible for designing new construction, you may also be hired to address flaws in existing facilities, whether it be in the building itself, or a needed improvement for internal systems. To pursue a career as a facilities engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in engineering. You also need to obtain a professional engineer certificate from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). They divide the exam into two parts, which you take after graduation, and after four years of experience, respectively.

What are some common challenges facilities engineers face when managing multiple sites or properties?

Facilities Engineers often oversee several buildings or locations, which can present challenges such as coordinating maintenance schedules across sites, ensuring consistent compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and managing emergency repairs remotely. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential for tracking work orders, allocating resources, and responding quickly to issues. Many engineers rely on facility management software and cross-functional teamwork to streamline operations and maintain high service levels across all properties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a facilities engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Facilities Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, building systems, and facility management, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), AutoCAD, and certifications like LEED or PE are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and project management skills help you effectively coordinate maintenance, renovations, and safety compliance. These skills are crucial for ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and optimized facility performance.
