Extra Board information

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an extra board employee?

To thrive as an Extra Board employee, you need flexibility, reliability, and a solid understanding of the core duties of the position, which may include operating vehicles, handling freight, or filling in for various roles as needed, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with scheduling systems, timekeeping software, and potentially specialized equipment or safety certifications is often required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to manage unpredictable hours make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial because Extra Board employees must efficiently cover shifts and maintain operational continuity in dynamic, fast-paced environments.

How does the scheduling and work routine typically function for someone on the extra board?

As an Extra Board employee, your schedule is often unpredictable, as you are called in to fill shifts or assignments when regular staff are unavailable or when there is an increase in demand. This means you need to be flexible and ready to work on short notice, sometimes with varying hours and days. While this can be challenging for those who prefer a set routine, it also offers the opportunity to gain experience across different shifts and routes, potentially leading to more permanent roles. Team interactions are frequent, as you may work with different crews depending on the assignment, helping you build a broad professional network within the organization.

What is the difference between Extra Board vs Train Crew Member?

FeatureExtra BoardTrain Crew Member
CredentialsVaries by employer, often no formal certification requiredRequired certifications, such as safety and operational training
Work EnvironmentOn-call, flexible shifts, often unpredictableScheduled shifts, consistent work environment
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in rail and transit industries for on-call staffingCore role in train operations, employed by rail companies

The Extra Board typically refers to on-call workers who fill in as needed, while a Train Crew Member has scheduled shifts and specific operational duties. Both roles are essential in rail operations, but the Extra Board offers more flexibility and less fixed scheduling compared to the structured schedule of a Train Crew Member.

What is an extra board?

An Extra Board refers to a group of employees, often in transportation or service industries, who are not assigned to regular shifts but are instead on standby to fill in for absent or additional staff as needed. Extra Board workers provide flexibility to employers by being available to cover unexpected vacancies, vacations, or increased workloads. This role is common in sectors like transit, railroads, and hospitality, where scheduling can be unpredictable. Extra Board employees may have varying hours and may be called in on short notice, offering both challenges and opportunities for those seeking flexible or supplementary work.
