How much do externship jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for externship in Nevada is $25.12, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.58 and $27.40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of projects or tasks can externs typically expect to work on during an externship?

Externs often participate in a variety of hands-on tasks and projects that align closely with the host organization's daily operations. Depending on the field, externs may observe client meetings, assist with research, contribute to reports, or shadow professionals in their day-to-day responsibilities. These experiences are designed to offer real-world insight and practical exposure, helping externs build relevant skills and expand their professional network. Additionally, externs often collaborate with team members and may be given opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback, which is invaluable for career development.

What is an externship?

An externship is a short-term, practical work experience designed to give students or recent graduates exposure to a particular industry or career field. Externships typically last from a few days to several weeks and often involve shadowing professionals, observing daily operations, and sometimes participating in hands-on tasks. Unlike internships, externships are usually unpaid and focus more on learning rather than contributing significantly to the organization's work. They are valuable for networking, gaining insight into specific roles, and enhancing a resume. Externships are especially common in fields like law, medicine, and business.

What is the difference between Externship vs Internship?

AspectExternshipInternship
CredentialsTypically no formal requirements; may vary by programOften requires enrollment in a related educational program
Work EnvironmentShort-term, observational, or project-based; often in real workplace settingsHands-on experience, active participation in daily tasks
PurposeObservation, career exploration, networkingSkill development, work experience, resume building
DurationUsually a few days to a few weeksTypically several weeks to months

Externships and internships both provide valuable industry exposure, but externships are generally shorter and more observational, focusing on career exploration. Internships offer more hands-on experience and skill development, often requiring enrollment in an educational program. Understanding these differences helps candidates choose the right opportunity for their career goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an externship, and why are they important?

To thrive in an externship, you need a foundational understanding of your chosen field, often supported by relevant academic coursework or training. Basic proficiency with the tools, software, or industry-specific systems used in the host organization is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, adaptability, and professionalism will help you stand out during your externship. These skills and qualities are crucial for maximizing learning opportunities, building professional relationships, and making a positive impression for potential future employment.

Job Description

Help healthcare students turn their education into a career!

Do you enjoy coaching people, building employer relationships, and seeing your work produce measurable results?

Unitek College is looking for a relationship-driven professional who can help healthcare students and graduates prepare for interviews, connect with employers, and secure meaningful employment in their field. This is not a traditional desk-based advising role. You will work directly with students, graduates, healthcare employers, faculty, and campus leaders to move people from the classroom into the workforce.

What you will do:

  • Coach students and graduates on resumes, job-search strategies, interviewing, networking, and professional communication.
  • Build relationships with healthcare employers to generate externship-to-hire and direct-hire opportunities.
  • Connect graduates with job openings, interviews, hiring events, and employer introductions.
  • Lead job-readiness workshops, classroom presentations, mock interviews, and career events.
  • Manage a student and graduate caseload, maintain consistent follow-up, and help candidates work through barriers affecting employment.
  • Track employer outreach, student engagement, interviews, placements, and employment outcomes in company systems.
  • Partner with faculty, campus leadership, and externship teams to improve graduate employment and externship-to-hire results.

How you will know you are succeeding. This is a results-driven role. Success includes:

  • Students complete required career-readiness activities on time.
  • Graduates remain engaged throughout the job search.
  • Employer relationships produce qualified interview and hiring opportunities.
  • Externship and clinical experiences convert into employment when possible.
  • Assigned programs meet or exceed graduate employment expectations.
  • Records remain accurate, complete, and ready for reporting or audit.

You may be a strong fit if you have experience in:

  • Career services or graduate placement
  • Staffing or recruiting
  • Healthcare recruiting
  • Workforce development
  • Employer relations or account management
  • Admissions or enrollment advising
  • Business development or community outreach
  • High-volume case management in a performance-driven environment
Qualifications

What experience you will bring:

  • At least five years of combined experience in career services, recruiting, staffing, workforce development, employer relations, account management, admissions, outreach, or a closely related field.
  • At least two years of direct experience in coaching, advising, placement, recruiting, business development, or relationship management.
  • The ability to build rapport while still holding students and graduates accountable.
  • Strong follow-through and the ability to manage deadlines, competing priorities, and a high-volume caseload.
  • Confidence communicating with students, graduates, healthcare employers, faculty, and campus leaders.
  • Comfort working with performance metrics, databases, CRM systems, and detailed documentation.
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred, but directly relevant experience and demonstrated performance will also be considered.

This role is a particularly good match for someone who:

  • Enjoys both coaching people and developing business relationships.
  • Gets satisfaction from helping someone land a job.
  • Works with urgency and does not wait for candidates or employers to come to them.
  • Can balance empathy with accountability.
  • Likes measurable goals and knows how to adjust when results fall behind.
  • Is comfortable representing the college in the Reno healthcare community.
