What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Externship for Phlebotomy, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Phlebotomy Externship, you need foundational knowledge of blood collection techniques, infection control, and basic anatomy, supported by completion of a phlebotomy training program. Familiarity with laboratory information systems, specimen labeling protocols, and venipuncture equipment is typically required. During the externship, students work under the guidance of experienced phlebotomists and other medical professionals, applying what they've learned in the classroom to real patients. Externships are a crucial part of most phlebotomy certification programs, as they provide practical experience, help students build confidence, and fulfill the clinical requirements needed for certification and employment.

Do you need an externship to be a phlebotomist?

While an externship is not always mandatory to become a phlebotomist, many training programs include externships to provide hands-on experience with blood collection and patient interaction.
