Job description
The Graduate Assistant, Career Counselor provides career counseling and career readiness support to undergraduate and graduate students through individual appointments, group sessions, workshops, and career development programming. This position assists students with career exploration, resume and cover letter development, interview preparation, networking, job and internship search strategies, and graduate or professional school preparation. The role also serves as the liaison for Andreas School of Business and Public Administration students and supports off-campus career engagement initiatives, including employer site visits, career treks, networking events, and other experiential career opportunities. In addition, the Graduate Assistant helps maintain employment opportunity resources and creates promotional content to increase student engagement with Career and Experiential Learning programs and services.
Essential Functions
1. Provides comprehensive career counseling and career development services to undergraduate and graduate students.
- Reviews and assists with resumes, cover letters, personal statements, LinkedIn profiles, and other career-related application materials.
- Coaches students on interview preparation, networking strategies, job and internship search techniques, salary negotiation, and graduate or professional school preparation.
- Administers and interprets career assessments to help students identify interests, strengths, values, and potential career pathways.
- Develops and facilitates career readiness presentations, workshops, classroom presentations, and student organization sessions.
- Collaborates with Career and Experiential Learning staff to develop career education resources, support career programming, and promote student engagement in career readiness initiatives.
- Serves as the Career and Experiential Learning liaison to the Andreas School of Business and Public Administration by supporting targeted career programming, student outreach, and academic partnership initiatives.
2. Manages and supports Career and Experiential Learning off-campus career engagement programs.
- Identifies, cultivates, and coordinates relationships with employers, community organizations, and industry partners to support off-campus career exploration opportunities.
- Plans, coordinates, and facilitates off-campus career engagement experiences, including employer site visits, career treks, external career fairs, industry tours, networking events, and experiential learning opportunities.
- Prepares students for off-campus experiences by facilitating pre-event orientations focused on professional etiquette, networking, employer expectations, and career readiness.
- Chaperones off-campus events and serves as a university representative to support student engagement, professional conduct, and relationship building with employers and community partners.
3. Maintains career opportunity resources and supports marketing and communication efforts for Career and Experiential Learning.
- Updates and maintains the job and internship database to ensure Barry students have access to accurate and timely employment opportunities.
- Reviews and organizes employer-submitted opportunities for student access and departmental use.
- Creates engaging digital content that provides career guidance and promotes Career and Experiential Learning services, events, and opportunities.
- Supports communication efforts related to career counseling, off-campus events, employer engagement, and student participation.
Qualifications / Requirements
- Must be enrolled as a graduate student at Barry University and remain in good academic standing for the duration of the appointment.
- Bachelor's degree required
- Strong interest in career counseling, student development, experiential learning, employer engagement, or higher education administration.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide professional, student-centered support to individuals from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, appointments, events, and deadlines.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle student information with professionalism and discretion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and willingness to learn career services platforms, student appointment systems, job databases, and related technology.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Interest in working with business, public administration, or related academic programs.
- Ability to represent the university professionally with students, faculty, staff, employers, alumni, and community partners.
- Availability to work approximately 20 hours per week, including evenings or off-campus events as needed.
