What is an experiential design director?

Experiential Design Directors are creative professionals who oversee the design and execution of immersive environments, events, or experiences that engage audiences on multiple sensory levels. They work across industries like retail, museums, entertainment, and corporate events to create memorable, interactive experiences that align with a brand’s vision and objectives. Their role involves leading teams, collaborating with clients, and integrating elements such as technology, architecture, and storytelling to craft impactful experiences. They also manage budgets, timelines, and ensure the final output meets both creative and strategic goals.

What are some typical challenges an experiential design director faces when leading multidisciplinary teams on large-scale projects?

As an Experiential Design Director, you’ll often encounter the challenge of aligning creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, timeline, and client expectations. Leading multidisciplinary teams—ranging from architects and graphic designers to digital technologists—requires strong communication and the ability to translate abstract concepts into actionable plans. Balancing innovation with feasibility and ensuring all stakeholders are engaged throughout the process is essential. Navigating these complexities while maintaining a cohesive and impactful user experience can be demanding, but it also provides significant opportunities for growth and leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an experiential design director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Experiential Design Director, you need a strong background in spatial design, project management, and creative strategy, often supported by a degree in design or architecture. Proficiency with design software like Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and experience with prototyping tools are essential, as are portfolios demonstrating successful experiential projects. Leadership, collaboration, and excellent communication skills set standout candidates apart by enabling them to guide multidisciplinary teams and articulate vision to clients. These abilities ensure innovative, immersive experiences are delivered on time and within budget, enhancing brand engagement and client satisfaction.

Experiential Designer, Creative and Media Services - Vice President
Job Summary
Citi's Creative and Media Services team is looking for a designer who lives for the big moment - someone who gets genuinely excited when the stakes are highest and the whole firm is watching. In this role you will support the design and production of high-quality presentations, event visuals, and live experience content that support Citi's most visible communications - from investor days and leadership forums to firmwide town halls and executive events. The VP, Experiential Design will work closely with production, editorial, and communications partners to ensure that every moment - on screen, on stage, or in a room - is visually compelling, brand-consistent, and purpose-built for its audience. The ideal candidate is a skilled visual communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment and understands that great design in a live or high-stakes context requires equal parts craft, precision, and adaptability.
Responsibilities
  • Design and produce high-quality presentations for senior leadership, executive communications, investor events, client forums, and firmwide moments - translating complex information into clear, compelling visual narratives.

  • Develop event visuals and live experience content including stage graphics, motion elements, digital signage, environmental displays, and run-of-show supporting materials for key communications events.

  • Partner closely with the VP, Lead Designer, and SVP, Creative Lead to ensure visual design is fully integrated into the creative and production approach for each event or experience.

  • Collaborate with Communications colleagues across business lines and functions to understand event objectives, audience expectations, and key messages - and translate those into effective visual design solutions.

  • Maintain and evolve a suite of branded presentation templates, event graphic systems, and reusable visual assets that can be deployed efficiently across productions.

  • Ensure all experiential design deliverables meet Citi's brand guidelines, accessibility standards, and technical specifications for the relevant presentation or event platform.

  • Manage multiple concurrent design workstreams across live events, presentation projects, and event content development, communicating proactively with the Production Coordinator on timelines and priorities.

  • Advise on emerging tools, platforms, and design approaches for presentation and live event content - including AI-assisted design tools - that can improve quality, efficiency, or creative impact.

  • Support post-event asset adaptation, ensuring key visual elements are versioned and archived for future use across channels.

  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Motion Design, Fine Arts, or a similar field.

  • Significant experience in presentation design, event visual production, or experiential design in a studio, agency, broadcast, or in-house creative environment.

  • Exceptional proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and/or Google Slides for executive-level presentation design; ability to build sophisticated, brand-compliant decks that communicate with clarity and visual authority.

  • Must be proficient in various multimedia and design technologies across the Adobe Creative Suite

  • Demonstrated experience designing visual systems for live events, including stage graphics, environmental displays, and digital signage at scale.

  • Deep understanding of how design functions differently in a live, high-stakes context - including technical constraints, timing, and audience sight lines.

  • Experience working within established brand systems and applying global visual identity standards consistently across presentation and event formats.

  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority design projects simultaneously, with a calm and organized approach under deadline pressure.

  • Experience and an active interest in AI-assisted design tools and emerging presentation and event technology platforms.

  • Strong collaborative instincts and the ability to receive, integrate, and push back on creative direction in equal measure.

  • Excellent communicator with the ability to present design thinking clearly to senior stakeholders and non-creative partners.

  • Operates efficiently in a very fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.

  • Integrity, maturity, dependability, and a positive professional attitude.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.

  • Experience or demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based environment within a heavily matrixed organization.
