How much do experienced software engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for experienced software engineer in Pennsylvania is $147,878.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $120,300.00 and $173,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an experienced software engineer?

Experienced software engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain software applications and systems. They typically have several years of industry experience, which enables them to take on complex projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architecture and strategic decisions. In addition to strong programming skills, experienced software engineers often possess expertise in software design patterns, system architecture, and project management. Their role is crucial for ensuring code quality, scalability, and the successful delivery of software products.

What is the difference between Experienced Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectExperienced Software EngineerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, relevant certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, coding bootcamps accepted
Work EnvironmentCollaborative teams, project management, system designFocus on coding, application development, and implementation
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, enterprise ITSoftware firms, tech startups, freelance projects

While both roles involve coding and software development, an Experienced Software Engineer typically has a broader scope, including system design and team leadership, whereas a Software Developer primarily focuses on writing code and building applications. The roles often overlap, but the engineer's experience usually encompasses more complex project responsibilities.

What opportunities for mentorship and leadership are available to experienced software engineers?

Experienced software engineers often have the chance to mentor junior team members, lead project teams, or take ownership of significant technical initiatives. Many companies encourage senior engineers to participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions, which can enhance leadership skills while contributing to the team's growth. Additionally, organizations frequently offer pathways into technical leadership roles, such as Tech Lead or Engineering Manager, enabling experienced engineers to expand their influence and impact across projects.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an experienced software engineer?

To thrive as an Experienced Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with development frameworks, version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and often certifications in specific technologies are highly valuable. Effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability help engineers collaborate on complex projects and respond to evolving requirements. These skills and qualities are crucial to delivering reliable, efficient software solutions and excelling in dynamic engineering environments.

With us, anticipate engaging and challenging projects that deliver innovative solutions and value-added technologies helping power more than 38 million North American homes.

We are looking to hire a highly motivated I&C Safety System Software Engineer who develops, implements software used in safetyrelated digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for commercial nuclear power plant modernization projects. This role ensures that software meets stringent functional safety requirements, complies with nuclear regulatory standards, and integrates seamlessly with systemlevel architectures. The engineer supports the full software lifecycle—from requirements and design through implementation, IV&V, configuration management, and licensing documentation

  • Work from detailed programming specifications, design, modify, develop, write and implement software-programming applications.

  • Participate in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing and certification of software.

  • Support and/or install software applications/operating systems.

  • Manage installation and configuration of complex suites third-party applications.

  • Provide resolution to a fundamental problem or seize an opportunity that improves the satisfaction of a customer, user or provider.

  • Explain the financial impact of a solution or a decision to assist customers in complying with budget requirements.

  • May take ownership of solutions deployed in a global environment. • May provide supervision and guidance to less experienced Software Engineers.

  • Develop safety critical software for digital I&C platforms used in reactor protection, engineered safety features actuation, and other safety class functions.

  • Translate system and regulatory requirements into detailed software requirements, design specifications, and implementation plans.

  • Implement software using approved development tools and methods appropriate for safety class applications (e.g., structured programming, formal methods, model-based development).

  • Support software architecture definition, including redundancy, determinism, diversity, and fail-safe behavior.

  • Perform software engineering test activities.

  • Ensure compliance with nuclear and safety critical software standards such as IEC 60880, IEC 62138, IEEE 7 4.3.2, IEC 61513, IEEE 1012and applicable NRC regulatory guidance.

  • Prepare and maintain lifecycle documentation, including requirements traceability, and configuration records.

  • Collaborate with system architects and system designers, hardware engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and licensing teams to ensure integrated, licensable solutions.

  • Participate in hazard analyses, FMEA, and software contributions to the safety case.

  • Support customer interactions, audits, and regulatory reviews related to software design and qualification.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of software development processes, tools, and quality practices.
