To thrive as an Experience Designer, you need a strong grasp of user experience (UX) principles, interaction design, and visual design, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Experience Designers frequently work alongside product managers, developers, marketers, and other stakeholders to ensure that user needs are addressed throughout the design process. They often facilitate workshops, present design concepts, and gather feedback to iterate on solutions. Regular communication and collaboration help align everyone on project goals and ensure that the user experience remains a central focus from concept through launch. This collaborative environment not only enhances final outcomes but also allows Experience Designers to learn from diverse perspectives.

What are Experience Designers?

Experience Designers are professionals who focus on creating meaningful and seamless interactions between users and products, services, or environments. They use research, design thinking, and prototyping to understand user needs and craft experiences that are both functional and enjoyable. Their work often involves collaborating with other designers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure that every customer touchpoint is intuitive and engaging. Experience Designers may work on digital products, physical spaces, or a combination of both, always aiming to enhance the overall user journey.

Job description

Overview
Do you have a passion for data visualization, deep learning about a complex domain, and making enterprise web applications make sense to users? We're looking for an experienced UX Designer to join our dynamic team of designers, product owners, developers, and domain experts to create web applications that empower users to access data easily and with confidence. This role involves working closely with a team of analysts and developers to deliver first-class data-driven web and mobile solutions. You'll enjoy working in our dynamic design team in a casual, supportive, and collaborative environment with flexible hours. Ability to work in person in Tacoma, WA regularly is essential.
Responsibilities
  • Work directly with product managers and analysts to design intuitive new features for enterprise web applications focused on highly specialized users
  • Transform sometimes vague requirements into well-defined functionality ready to be handed over to developers for implementation
  • Apply and extend existing design systems and visual styles to ensure consistency and usability
  • Create user flows, wireframes and detailed specifications to describe the user experience for stakeholders to review and developers to implement
  • Become an expert in our applications and domain (cost analysis)
  • In collaboration with a cross-functional team, conduct user research: interviews, user testing, surveys, etc.
  • Collaborate with other designers to mentor junior staff on the design team

Skills Required
Required:
  • This is a mid-level position requiring 3 - 8 years of UX design experience
  • Designers on our team also often act as a liaison between developers and end-user stakeholders, so the ability to learn and understand the customer domain (cost and schedule analysis) is fundamental to the position
  • Portfolio demonstrating talent and skill designing enterprise web applications
  • Experience using Figma or an equivalent mockup/wire-framing application
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies (HTML, CSS) and frameworks (bootstrap, material design)
  • Experience designing for Accessibility (Section 508, WCAG 2.0+)
  • Experience working with developers
  • The ability to obtain and maintain the proper security clearance is required
  • U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred / Nice-to-Have:
  • Experience with data-driven design (analytics analysis)
  • Experience working with the Federal Government, Departments of War or Homeland Security
  • Experience with data visualization / BI tools like Tableau or PowerBI
  • Experience with front-end development and/or QA on a software development team
  • Technical writing skills
  • Salary range: $65,000 - $95,000/year, depending on experience and qualifications

Education
A bachelor's degree in computer science (or other relevant concentration) required. An additional three years of directly relevant software development experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
