What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Experience Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Experience Designer, you need a strong grasp of user experience (UX) principles, interaction design, and visual design, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping platforms is typically required. Exceptional collaboration, empathy, and communication skills help you understand user needs and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for crafting intuitive, engaging digital experiences that meet both user expectations and business goals.

How does an Experience Designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Experience Designers frequently work alongside product managers, developers, marketers, and other stakeholders to ensure that user needs are addressed throughout the design process. They often facilitate workshops, present design concepts, and gather feedback to iterate on solutions. Regular communication and collaboration help align everyone on project goals and ensure that the user experience remains a central focus from concept through launch. This collaborative environment not only enhances final outcomes but also allows Experience Designers to learn from diverse perspectives.

What are Experience Designers?

Experience Designers are professionals who focus on creating meaningful and seamless interactions between users and products, services, or environments. They use research, design thinking, and prototyping to understand user needs and craft experiences that are both functional and enjoyable. Their work often involves collaborating with other designers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure that every customer touchpoint is intuitive and engaging. Experience Designers may work on digital products, physical spaces, or a combination of both, always aiming to enhance the overall user journey.

Job description

UX Designer
Location: Sunnyvale, CA
ABOUT THIS FEATURED OPPORTUNITY
Our client's Retail Engineering & Publishing Systems team is seeking a UX Designer to support an internal Content Management System (CMS) that powers content for a large, external-facing support property.
This role will help transform a traditionally text-heavy experience into a modern, editorial, narrative-driven UX . The designer will play a key role in evolving the CMS toward visually rich layouts while contributing to design systems and internal Sketch component libraries.
This is a highly visible role supporting a major B2B product launch, working closely with business stakeholders, engineering partners, and leadership.
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU
  • Own design projects end-to-end - from initial brief through final presentation and handoff, with minimal supervision
  • Produce high-quality mockups, responsive layouts, and production-ready assets using Sketch (2025+)
  • Translate product and business requirements into thoughtful, editorial-style UX experiences within a CMS environment
  • Present design concepts and strategy to stakeholders, executive leadership, and occasionally C-suite audiences
  • Lead visual storytelling through strong typography, hierarchy, and layout systems
  • Build and contribute Sketch components to an internal design system/library
  • Partner cross-functionally to shape tone, voice, and communication strategy for high-impact launches

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
  • 5-6+ years of UX Design experience, ideally within SaaS or CMS platforms
    • Expert-level proficiency in Sketch (2025+) - this is a production-heavy role and Sketch mastery is an absolute requirement
    • Demonstrated ability to independently own a design brief from early concept through final presentation and delivery
    • Solid understanding of responsive design principles and component-based systems
  • Strong eye for typography with a deep understanding of visual hierarchy and editorial layout design
  • Exceptional communication skills with proven experience presenting design concepts to business stakeholders, executive leadership, and occasionally C-suite audiences

NICE TO HAVES
  • Hands-on experience contributing to design systems and building component libraries
  • Experience on external-facing, consumer, or Marcom-style digital properties
  • Hands-on experience designing for AEM or enterprise CMS platforms
