Job description

Our Community Roots
The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Washeshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival.
Each group's name means "The People" in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region.
Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.
What You'll Do
As the 3Nations Wellness Center Exercise Specialist, you'll support the RSIC Diabetes Control and Prevention Program by helping Type I/Type II diabetic and at-risk children and adults build safe, consistent physical activity habits.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead/coordinate at least 10 classes weekly (5 daytime, 5 evening) across activities such as aerobics, water exercise, walking, and sports
- Provide one-on-one exercise instruction upon request
- Create individualized exercise plans in coordination with healthcare providers
- Coordinate with outside health clubs/organizations used by participating clients
- Support prenatal/postpartum exercise planning for pregnant diabetic and at-risk clients
- Contribute fitness education to the Diabetes Control Team and submit a monthly newsletter article
- Coordinate transportation for client participation as needed; assist with other duties as assigned
Required qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED; fitness/health knowledge (certified trainer preferred)
- Strong verbal/written communication; 1 year fitness instruction preferred
- CPR within 3 months; TB test documentation; valid NV driver's license
- Ability to work with Indian people in diverse age groups; evenings/weekends as needed
Apply to help advance practical, culturally respectful wellness support.
A Typical Shift
Your day starts by reviewing the schedule and participant needs, then setting up spaces and equipment so classes run smoothly and safely. You'll spend much of the day coaching groups and checking in with participants about comfort level, progress, and barriers-adjusting routines to meet people where they are.
Between sessions, you'll coordinate with clinical staff to align activity plans with care goals, handle quick outreach or scheduling changes, and document notes for continuity. Some days include preparing a short fitness-focused newsletter piece or arranging rides so clients can attend. Afternoons may transition into evening classes, keeping energy steady and instruction clear through a full Monday-Friday schedule.
Your Benefit Package
- Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage
- 401(k)
- Life Insurance
- Paid Time Off
Please Note: Hiring preference is provided to qualified members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Reno-Sparks Indian Colony requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment criminal background check, drug screen, and confirmation of professional references.
