Job description

Description The City of Aiken Engineering & Utilities Department is accepting applications for a Vehicle Operator (Street Sweeper). This position performs routine and specialized sweeping to reduce pollutants entering the storm drainage system, while also assisting with a variety of stormwater operations and maintenance activities as assigned. Working hours for this position are 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM.

Examples of Duties Operates mechanical and regenerative air street sweepers along assigned routes, including streets, gutters, municipal facilities, parking lots, and rights of way Operates vehicles such as street sweeper, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, tractor-trailers, and any other vehicle in the maintenance of the utility system Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment, reporting maintenance needs or equipment malfunctions promptly Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of sweeping equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation Removes accumulated debris, sediment, leaves, and trash from public roadways to prevent stormwater pollution and maintain clean transportation corridors Documents daily activities, including miles swept, debris removed, and any observed stormwater issues requiring attention Supports the stormwater team with operations and maintenance tasks such as inlet inspections, catch basin cleaning, drainage system maintenance, and minor repairs Assists with storm event preparation and response, including debris removal, post-storm cleanup, and emergency callouts as needed Follows all safety procedures, including traffic control standards and personal protective equipment requirements Communicates with the public in a professional manner and provides courteous assistance when needed Performs other related duties as assigned to support overall stormwater operations and municipal maintenance needs Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent Valid state driver's license [Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B preferred; or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe] Prior experience operating heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, or street sweepers (preferred). Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides knowledge, skill, and abilities. Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment safely and efficiently Working knowledge of roadway and drainage systems (preferred) Ability to read and follow route maps, schedules, and written instructions Strong attention to detail, including awareness of roadway hazards and environmental conditions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team Understanding of basic stormwater pollution prevention and environmental best practices, or ability to learn Good communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with staff and the public Supplemental Information This position is subject to a criminal background check for any convictions directly related to its duties and responsibilities.
