Job description

About this role

The USGA Golf Museum and World Golf Hall of Fame seeks a recent graduate or currently enrolled student in Museum Studies for a paid internship in the nationโ€™s oldest sports museum. Founded in 1936, the USGA Golf Museum is the worldโ€™s leading institution for the collection, preservation, interpretation and dissemination of golf history. Since 1936, the Museum has connected golfers, sports fans and scholars with remarkable artifacts, documents, images and stories that chronicle golfโ€™s rich history.

The Museum Collection comprises more than 85,000 catalogued objects documenting the history of golf from its origins to the present. Included in the collection are artifacts from some of the most important moments in the history of championship golf. Highlights of the collection include Alan Shepardโ€™s Moon Club; works of art by Rembrandt, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali and Roy Lichtenstein; a trophy from the 1904 Olympic games; rare and significant artifacts from World Wars I and II and an extensive collection of memorabilia from U.S. Presidents.

The Museum Collections Intern will assist with numerous projects supporting the Museum Collection. S/he will gain valuable experience in several areas of collections care including hands-on work related to object handling, cataloging and rehousing of collections. The Museum Collections Intern will assist the collections team in the large-scale rehousing and reorganization project and can expect to make significant contributions to improving data standardization and storage conditions. This internship is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with a unique museum collection.

What youโ€™ll do:

Collections Care

  • Assist with long-term, large-scale collections projects including rehousing and cataloging of artifacts
  • Support rehousing and movement of materials across all collections storage locations
  • Support collections team in receiving and releasing shipments, packing artifacts for transport and condition reporting
  • Support collections team in gallery maintenance through climate monitoring and integrated pest management
  • Additional collections management projects as directed

Collections Processing and Cataloging

  • Cataloging materials in the Museumโ€™s collectionโ€™s management system, TMS Collections
  • Develop familiarity with the TMS Record Style Guide to standardize existing TMS records for Museum recordsย 
  • Additional cataloging projects as directedย 

Where youโ€™ll be

This role will be based at our Liberty Corner, NJ campus, working approximately 20 hours per week, ideally with 3 days per week on-site, between Monday - Friday.ย  The intern should be able to commit to at least one full semester.

What you bring

  • Currently enrolled student or recent graduate of an MA program in Museum Studies or related field
  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to think creatively and thoughtfully when faced with unique storage needs and willingness to voice opinions on housing methods
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with team members
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Experience with museum databases a plus

Compensation: The rate of pay is $20 per hour, plus overtime in accordance with applicable New Jersey law.ย
