Job description

We are hiring for a Field Systems Trainer on behalf of an established transportation infrastructure company operating major toll expressway networks in Northern Virginia. Based out of the Manassas area, this dual-function role combines technical instruction with hands-on field technician duties. The position is responsible for designing and delivering technical training on tolling technology, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and network infrastructure, while remaining ready to support field repairs and system outages as needed.

Location: Manassas, VA
Schedule: 4-day 10-hour shift schedule (potentially day and night shifts open)
Compensations: $36.00-$40.00 DOE

Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and conduct technical training programs—including classroom instruction, hands-on lab exercises, and field demonstrations—for field systems technicians.
  • Create and maintain technical reference materials, standard operating procedures (SOPs), manuals, job aids, and equipment checklists.
  • Provide instruction on installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting for toll collection systems (TCS), intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and network communication systems (NCS).
  • Train technicians on lane controllers, RFID systems, CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, routers, switches, fiber optic splicing/testing (OTDR), and electrical wiring/grounding.
  • Perform field observations to evaluate technician performance, identify skill gaps, and reinforce proper troubleshooting, work order logging, and safety protocols.
  • Serve as a working technician when required, responding to field escalations, system outages, equipment repairs, and routine maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for training schedules, technician certifications, qualification tracking, and Learning Management System (LMS) entries.
  • Reinforce safe work practices in traffic zones, elevated work areas, confined spaces, and around energized electrical components and heavy equipment.

Qualifications and Key Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; vocational training, associate degree, technical certifications, OSHA credentials, or instructor certifications preferred.
  • 3 to 5+ years of hands-on experience in field technical support, IT, tolling systems, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), network infrastructure, or fiber optic repair.
  • Prior background in training, coaching, mentoring, or instructing technical personnel is strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical background in fiber optics, network switches/routers, electrical cabling, and field service practices.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office, e-learning tools, LMS tracking, Windows OS (required), and Linux familiarity (preferred).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain complex hardware and network concepts to technicians of varying experience levels.
  • Willingness and physical ability to balance classroom training with hands-on field duty (including working in elevated positions, bucket trucks, tight spaces, and outdoor weather).
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including night shifts, weekends, or emergency outage callbacks as required by field operations.
