What is an executive insurance controller?

Executive Insurance Controllers are senior financial professionals who oversee the accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance functions within an insurance company. They are responsible for managing budgets, ensuring accurate financial statements, and implementing internal controls to safeguard company assets. Additionally, they work closely with executive leadership to develop financial strategies, assess risk, and ensure the organization adheres to industry laws and regulations. Their expertise is vital for maintaining the financial health and integrity of the insurance company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive insurance controller?

To thrive as an Executive Insurance Controller, you need expertise in financial management, insurance accounting, regulatory compliance, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, often accompanied by CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with financial reporting software, insurance management systems, and advanced Excel skills is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory adherence, and strategic decision-making essential for organizational success in the insurance industry.

What are some common challenges faced by executive insurance controllers when managing cross-departmental financial reporting?

Executive Insurance Controllers often need to coordinate financial data from multiple departments, such as claims, underwriting, and compliance. One common challenge is ensuring consistency and accuracy across diverse data sources, which may use different systems or reporting standards. Building strong relationships and clear communication channels with department heads is essential to streamline data collection and resolve discrepancies quickly. Proficiency in insurance-specific accounting regulations and financial software also helps address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Assistant Controller – Property & Casualty Insurance (REQUIRED)

Location: Tampa Bay, Florida – In the heart of the Westshore Business District, just minutes from Tampa International Airport

Are you a technically strong accounting leader with deep Property & Casualty insurance experience who thrives in a dynamic, highly regulated environment?

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to help drive excellence in financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and accounting operations. This is a high-impact leadership role supporting the integrity of our Statutory and US GAAP reporting framework while strengthening internal controls, audit readiness, and operational performance.

P&C insurance experience is not optional — it is essential for success in this role.

In addition to meaningful work and executive visibility, we offer a highly competitive compensation and benefits package and a collaborative, performance-driven culture — all in a prime Tampa Bay location.

What You’ll Do

Lead & Elevate Accounting Operations

  • Direct daily accounting and financial reporting activities, including month-end close, balance sheet reviews, and financial statement preparation
  • Maintain oversight of the general ledger and overall financial reporting environment
  • Review and approve journal entries and monthly account reconciliations

Drive Compliance & Strengthen Controls

  • Support the design, documentation, and testing of internal controls
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements and corporate accounting policies
  • Oversee preparation and timely submission of quarterly and annual Statutory filings
  • Coordinate annual Statutory and GAAP audits and serve as primary liaison to external auditors and regulators

Provide Technical Accounting Leadership

  • Research complex accounting matters and provide recommendations in accordance with Statutory accounting principles and US GAAP
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analyses, and executive management reporting
  • Support capital adequacy assessments and respond to regulatory and rating agency inquiries

Develop & Mentor Talent

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting team members, including temporary staff and interns
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional growth

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (CPA strongly preferred)
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of 5+ years within Property & Casualty insurance (REQUIRED)
  • Strong expertise in Statutory accounting principles and US GAAP within an insurance environment
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, strategic thinking, and executive-level communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven, regulated setting
  • Advanced Excel proficiency

Why This Role Matters

This position plays a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of financial reporting within a publicly traded insurance organization. You will work closely with executive leadership, auditors, regulators, and rating agencies — directly influencing financial strategy while developing and leading a high-performing accounting team.

If you bring strong P&C insurance expertise and are ready to step into a visible, high-impact leadership role, we encourage you to apply.

Why Join Us

  • Prime location in Tampa Bay’s Westshore District, near Tampa International Airport
  • Highly competitive compensation and benefits package
  • Executive visibility and strategic impact
  • Dynamic, collaborative, and performance-driven culture

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Additional screenings (driving history, credit report, etc.) may apply based on position requirements.
