Job description

Position: Scholars Tutor
June Shelton School and Evaluation Center is the largest private school providing education for average to above-average intelligent students with learning differences.
Shelton is currently accepting applications for Scholars Tutors interested in joining the Outreach program. The Shelton Scholars program provides support to learning different students who have experienced difficulty in the traditional classroom and who are non-Shelton students.
Function
Serve as tutor in the Outreach program and demonstrate ability to teach children ages six and above in the areas of reading, spelling, handwriting, auditory, and memory skills. The scholars tutor will use the Sequential English Education (SEE) curriculum. The Shelton Scholars program is available on Saturdays during the school year and during the summer.
Qualifications
High School diploma is required. Ability to tutor children ages six years and older with competency in reading, spelling, and handwriting. Knowledge of educating students with learning differences is preferred. Must have basic computer skills and technology savvy.
Essential Functions
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential to the successful performance of this job. Because of the interaction with students, it is essential that the person in this position maintains good attendance.
  • Apply curriculum as outlined in the Shelton Scholars curriculum guide.
  • Utilize effective instructional skills based on analysis of diagnostic testing and incorporating appropriate modifications and accommodations.
  • Communicate with students in a professional, calm, and supportive manner and serve as a student advocate.
  • Work as an effective team member with other faculty and non-teaching staff.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Attend curriculum and staff meetings related to the Shelton Scholars program.
  • Support the mission of the Shelton School by promoting the school in a positive manner and facilitating a sense of Shelton community.
  • Adhere to Shelton's and the Outreach program's policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Scholars/SEE Coordinator or Executive Director of Emerita.
