Job description

Position: Assistant Superintendent
Department: Keith Hills
Status: Full Time
Position Summary:
The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and other turf areas; supervises the maintenance and repair of irrigations systems; and performs chemical and fertilizer applications to areas on the golf course. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of equipment.
  • Performs the daily set up of the golf course by checking and maintaining correct moistures for turf plants, cutting cups and supervising other employees.
  • Performs chemical and fertilizer applications on golf course properties; including greens, tees, fairways, roughs and landscape areas.
  • Maintains and repairs the irrigation system, pipes and irrigation heads as needed, including all facets of golf course irrigation.
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

Education/Experience:
  • 2 or 4 year degree in Turfgrass Management or related field.
  • 2 or more years' experience in golf course maintenance or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit sector is also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Obtain a North Carolina Pesticide License within 6 months of hire.
  • Maintain a valid North Carolinas driver's license.
  • Complete knowledge of chemical application equipment.
  • Responsible for reading, understanding and keeping current with chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with golfers, faculty, staff, students, and university officials.
  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
  • Detail-oriented and willing to work in a changing environment.
  • Upon hire, have a broad knowledge of, and abide by, Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX and FERPA guidelines.
