Executive Financial Controller information

What does an executive financial controller do?

An Executive Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of an organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, managing budgets, and implementing internal controls to safeguard assets. They analyze financial data to support strategic decision-making and often lead the accounting or finance department. Additionally, they ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations, coordinate audits, and contribute to financial planning and forecasting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive financial controller?

Thriving as an Executive Financial Controller requires deep expertise in financial management, accounting principles, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a CPA, ACCA, or similar professional qualification. Mastery of ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and familiarity with financial reporting software are typically essential. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication set top performers apart in overseeing teams and interacting with senior stakeholders. These skills are crucial to ensuring accurate financial reporting, strategic decision-making, and maintaining the financial health of the organization.

How does an executive financial controller typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational objectives?

An Executive Financial Controller plays a strategic role by working closely with department heads, senior management, and cross-functional teams to align financial planning with overall business goals. They regularly participate in budgeting sessions, provide financial insights for decision-making, and ensure compliance with internal controls across departments. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as the Controller must translate complex financial data into actionable recommendations and support other teams in managing resources efficiently. This collaborative approach helps drive organizational success and fosters a culture of financial accountability.

Job description

About Us - FLI
FieldLine Industries is a Colorado-based quantum sensing company developing and manufacturing high-sensitivity quantum magnetometers and advanced multi-sensor systems. Our technology is being applied in a wide variety of application areas including navigation in GNSS-denied environments, unexploded ordnance detection, maritime sensing, and space systems.
Our technology sits at the intersection of quantum physics, precision engineering, and real-world deployment—transforming applications in navigation, space and geographical mapping, geophysics, defense applications, and fundamental research. We're a small, highly technical team that values solving problems together, with curiosity, rigor, reliability, and humor.
As we continue to grow, we're looking for our first dedicated Controller to build the financial foundation that supports the next stage of the company.
The Role
Working directly with the CEO, you will own FieldLine's accounting and financial operations. You'll ensure the company's financial records are accurate, timely, and decision-ready while building the financial systems that support our continued growth.
This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the monthly close process, overseeing accounts payable and receivable, supporting payroll, preparing financial reporting, monitoring cash flow, and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting and tax requirements.
As a foundational member of our team, you'll also have the opportunity to improve how finance works at FieldLine. This is a high-trust, high-ownership role where your work will directly influence business decisions and help build the operational backbone of the company.
What we're looking for...
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys bringing structure and clarity to a growing organization.
You take pride in keeping the books clean, catching details others miss, and building processes that scale. You enjoy improving workflows rather than simply maintaining them, and you're comfortable working independently while partnering closely with leadership.
You're equally comfortable reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, answering operational questions, and identifying opportunities to make financial processes more efficient.
We also value curiosity. Technology continues to change how accounting work gets done, and we're looking for someone who embraces modern tools—including AI—to improve productivity, automate routine work, and strengthen financial operations while exercising sound professional judgment.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain the general ledger and day-to-day accounting operations.
  • Retain accurate and up-to-date financial records and ensure timely month-end and year-end close.
  • Process and reconcile accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking activity, and credit cards
  • Prepare rolling cash forecasts, and help leadership understand upcoming funding needs and financial runway.
  • Support annual financial reviews, audits, and compliance requirements as needed.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Coordinate with external CPA partners for tax preparation and annual financial reviews.
  • Develop and continuously improve accounting processes, internal controls, and financial policies that will scale with the company..
  • Leverage modern accounting software and AI-enabled tools to improve reporting, documentation, reconciliations, workflow automation, and accounting efficiency while maintaining strong financial controls.
  • Contribute to the company’s capital, financial and liquidity strategies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP
  • Experience owning the full accounting cycle through financial statement preparation
  • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or similar ERP systems
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong Excel and financial analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently in a small, fast-moving organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information
Nice to Have
  • CPA certification (active or inactive)
  • Experience as a Controller or Senior Accountant in a startup or small business
  • Experience supporting government contracts, SBIR/STTR programs, or defense-related organizations
  • Familiarity with FAR cost principles or indirect rate structures
  • Experience implementing accounting systems or improving financial processes
  • Experience using AI tools to improve efficiency in accounting, reporting, documentation, or workflow automation
  • Experience supporting companies moving from early-stage R&D into product commercialization
Why join FieldLine
  • Build something from the ground up. As our first dedicated Controller, you'll establish the accounting systems, financial processes, and financial foundation that will support the company's next decade of growth.
  • Help build the financial foundation of a growing quantum technology company
  • Work directly with the CEO on strategic and operational decisions
  • High ownership and visibility—you'll shape how finance operates as the company grows
  • Opportunity to improve systems rather than simply maintain them
  • A collaborative, thoughtful work environment where people genuinely enjoy working together
  • Competitive benefits package
  • A culture that values deep thinking, fast iteration, and building things that matter
  • Quarterly team-building events
Finally, we believe in maintaining a healthy work-life balance and do our best to support our team in enjoying life beyond the workday. Extended, 80-hour workweeks are not part of the expectation here.

Location: 5540 Central Ave STE 220, Boulder, CO 80301

Ability to Commute: Boulder, CO 80301 (Required)
