Executive Engineering information

What is executive engineering?

Executive engineering refers to high-level leadership roles within engineering organizations, typically involving positions such as Chief Engineer, VP of Engineering, or Engineering Director. Professionals in executive engineering are responsible for setting technical vision, developing engineering strategies, overseeing large teams, and ensuring successful project delivery. They bridge the gap between business objectives and technical execution, often collaborating with other executives to drive company growth and innovation.

What are some common challenges faced by executive engineering professionals when managing cross-functional teams?

Executive Engineering professionals often encounter challenges in aligning diverse teams with varying technical backgrounds and priorities. Effective communication is crucial, as they must translate complex engineering concepts for non-technical stakeholders while ensuring that project goals remain clear to all team members. Balancing innovation with budget, timeline, and resource constraints is another key challenge, requiring strong leadership and strategic decision-making skills. Building trust and fostering collaboration across departments is essential for driving successful outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Executive Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management experience, and typically a relevant engineering degree with professional certification (such as PE or equivalent). Familiarity with CAD software, project management tools (like MS Project), and industry-specific standards is essential. Leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and projects. These skills and qualifications ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and the ability to lead teams in complex technical environments.

What is the difference between Executive Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectExecutive EngineeringMechanical Engineering

Work EnvironmentLeadership roles in project management, strategic planning, and client interactionDesign, analysis, testing, and manufacturing in labs or on-site
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, corporations, government agencies in leadership positionsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors

Executive Engineering focuses on leadership, strategic decision-making, and project oversight, often requiring advanced degrees and certifications. Mechanical Engineering involves technical design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering credentials, Executive Engineering emphasizes management skills, whereas Mechanical Engineering emphasizes technical expertise.

What does an executive engineer do?

An executive engineer oversees engineering projects, manages teams, and ensures technical standards and project deadlines are met. They often coordinate between management and technical staff, utilize engineering software, and may hold professional engineering licenses. Their role combines technical expertise with leadership and strategic planning.

Job description

Conexiom is transforming how manufacturers and distributors process critical business documents. Our AI-powered platform automates the conversion of unstructured orders and other commercial documents into accurate, validated, ERP-ready transactions.

Today, Conexiom processes more than one billion order line items annually and combines advanced AI, deterministic validation, deep ERP integrations, and enterprise-grade automation to help customers eliminate manual work and improve customer experiences. As we evolve into anorder automation platformcompany, we are modernizing our architecture to create a more scalable, extensible, and developer-friendly foundation for the future.

About the Opportunity:

We are looking for an exceptional Principal Engineer to help lead the architectural transformation of Conexiom's platform. This is not a traditional individual contributor role. You will serve as one of the company's most senior technical leaders, helping define the future architecture of our platform while influencing engineering, product, data, AI, and infrastructure decisions across the organization.

You will partner closely with executive leadership, engineering teams, product management, and reliability engineering to evolve our architecture from a collection of successful products into a unified, modern platform. This includes driving API-first design, cloud-native architecture, AI enablement, platform scalability, developer productivity, and operational excellence.

What you'll do

Lead Architectural Transformation:

  • Define and champion Conexiom's long-term technical architecture vision.
  • Drive modernization initiatives across applications, services, integrations, data, and infrastructure.
  • Establish architectural principles, standards, and governance processes.
  • Lead architecture reviews and guide critical technology decisions.
  • Create reference architectures that enable scale, resiliency, extensibility, and rapid innovation.

Accelerate Platform Unification

  • Help evolve Conexiom toward a unified platform architecture.
  • Drive modernization initiatives around containerization, service boundaries, shared platform capabilities, developer tooling, and common services.
  • Improve consistency across user experiences, integrations, APIs, observability, and operational workflows.

Champion Engineering Excellence

  • Mentor senior engineers, staff engineers, architects, and engineering leaders.
  • Raise the technical bar across the organization through coaching, reviews, and standards.
  • Improve software quality, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Promote modern engineering practices including DevSecOps, platform engineering, observability, and automated testing.

Enable Business Growth

  • Collaborate directly with customers, partners, and strategic prospects on architecture discussions.
  • Support enterprise-scale integrations with ERP, CRM, eCommerce, and partner ecosystems.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and lead proof-of-concepts where appropriate.
  • Balance innovation with practical business outcomes.

What Success Looks Like

Within your first 12-18 months you will:

  • Establish a clear architectural north star for the company.
  • Accelerate migration toward a modern cloud-native platform.
  • Improve engineering velocity through platform simplification and developer enablement.
  • Increase platform scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Help position Conexiom as the leading AI-powered commerce automation platform in the industry.
  • Develop the next generation of technical leaders across the engineering organization.

What We're Looking For

Required Experience

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience building large-scale SaaS platforms.
  • 5+ years operating at Staff, Principal, Distinguished Engineer, or equivalent architecture leadership level.
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, platform architecture, cloud-native development, and software modernization.
  • Proven success leading architectural transformations in complex production environments.
  • Strong experience with public cloud platforms.
  • Expertise in APIs, event-driven architectures, distributed messaging, microservices, and modern integration patterns.
  • Experience operating highly available, mission-critical systems at scale.
  • Strong understanding of software delivery, DevOps, CI/CD, and cloud operations.
  • Exceptional communication and influence skills.

Ideal Experience

  • Experience modernizing monolithic applications into modular platform architectures.
  • Experience with AI/ML platforms, LLM integrations, agent frameworks, and AI-powered products.
  • Experience building platforms that integrate deeply with ERP ecosystems such as SAP, Epicor, Infor, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or Salesforce.
  • Experience with containerization, Kubernetes, platform engineering, and developer experience tooling.
  • Experience leading architecture in growth-stage SaaS organizations.

Leadership Characteristics

  • Thinks in years, not sprints.
  • Balances pragmatism with visionary thinking.
  • Earns influence through technical credibility rather than authority.
  • Simplifies complexity.
  • Obsesses over customer outcomes.
  • Uses AI as a force multiplier for both engineering teams and customers.
  • Raises the capability of everyone around them.
  • Thrives in environments undergoing significant transformation.
