COURIER seeks a National Political Editor to join its national division. 


Reporting to COURIER National’s Managing Director of Growth + Revenue, the National Political Editor will help drive the editorial strategy across COURIER National’s newsletter, social, and video/audio products, including managing COURIER’s D.C. Bureau team, as well as a slate of mission-aligned newsletter and Op-Ed contributors. The National Political Editor will set coverage priorities and assignments across national newsletter and site-based stories, take the lead on editing and fact-checking all COURIER National newsletter posts, and serve as the primary project manager of all COURIER National original reporting initiatives and campaigns to ensure cross-departmental collaboration. 


In this role, the National Political Editor will be charged with ensuring integration of key drumbeat narratives and breaking news stories throughout COURIER National products, as well as work closely with COURIER Local’s Head of Political Content to ensure cross-pollination and amplification of original local reporting across COURIER National products. 


This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned political news editor who thinks creatively about how to repurpose and repackage original reporting for different platforms and audience consumption habits, and has a keen understanding of how to generate and maximize attention for breaking news stories and other relevant news content in today’s decentralized and fast-moving online media ecosystem.

Editorial role & responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the executive leadership team to set the editorial strategy and core narrative drumbeats for COURIER National and products across Social, Video/Audio and Newsletters. 
  • Manage the D.C. Bureau chief political correspondent and support them in setting priorities for coverage beats, assignments, and breaking news opportunities.
  • Manage COURIER National’s Newsletter Contributor talent and products to ensure mission-aligned talent, content focus and consistent growth of subscribers, open and engagement rates, and revenue across all national newsletter products. This includes 9 current newsletters and columns. 
  • Develop the weekly aggregate newsletter product to highlight leading stories and initiatives from COURIER. 
  • Build and manage COURIER National’s digital print and multimedia opinion program to support growth goals across COURIER National social and web-based products and channels; including taking lead on outreach, production, and distribution of video and print op-eds, from pitch to final piece 
  • Support the development and implementation of national and cross-network coverage campaigns and initiatives across the COURIER network and manage select campaigns/initiatives as agreed upon and assigned 


Partnerships role & responsibilities include: 

  • Ensure cross-promotion and integration of breaking news and other original reporting throughout COURIER National Products, as well as work closely with COURIER Local team to lift up key original reporting from the local network throughout COURIER National products 
  • Oversee the strategic planning, tracking and success of key reporting initiatives and campaigns (i.e. The Cover-Up campaign), including managing cross-functional teams and reporters to achieve campaign/project goals and objectives, report out on program impact to CEO, BoD and other key stakeholders, and serve as an on-record spokesperson for the campaign when applicable for earned media opportunities 
  • Lead outreach to mission-aligned organizations, establishing publishing partnerships for newsletter, site and op-ed contributions to support COURIER National growth + engagement goals 
  • Work closely with COURIER National Managing Director and Chief Revenue Officer to meet National Newsletter annual and quarterly revenue goals 
  • Develop and foster relationships and sources with elected officials, political activists, political creators, and other key stakeholders 
  • Assist national staff with booking National newsletter talent for web series, podcasts, reporting projects, etc.


The ideal candidate will have some of the following:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in online news media in a reporting and/or news editor position 
  • Strong background in political journalism and/or progressive media 
  • Strong knowledge of journalism standards and ethics
  • Knowledge of best practices in social media platforms, content creation, marketing and key performance indicators 
  • Highly in-tune with breaking news, current events, and trends 
  • Strong understanding and experience in narrative change and leveraging various platforms to spread awareness, build community, and mobilize measurable actions 
  • An existing network of political leaders, media outlets, organizations, and sources to facilitate collaborations with 
  • Knowledge and/or an interest in understanding what’s happening in DC AND in key states across the country 
  • Comfortable representing COURIER in external meetings, events, and public relation opportunities 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Video and graphic design skills are not required but preferred
