Job description

UVA Health is hiring a Communications Specialist to support the communications functions for the Executive Vice President of Health Affairs/Chief Executive Officer of UVA Health. The position is guided by a Senior Communications Strategist and reports into the UVA Health Office of Strategic Marketing & Communication.
This position helps produce high-quality communications that inform, engage, and build trust within internal and external audiences. This role provides day-to-day coordination and execution for executive communications initiatives, helping ensure projects move efficiently from concept through final delivery. Responsibilities include preparing drafts and background materials, proofreading and formatting, tracking performance metrics, maintaining editorial calendars and communications platforms, and supporting events and engagements. Success in this role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organization skills, sound judgment and discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Job Description
  • Assists with the planning and execution of internal and external communications strategies to achieve measurable goals in support of organizational priorities.
  • Tracks timelines, manages copy flow, coordinates reviews and approvals, and ensures projects remain on schedule.
  • Partners with executives, administrative professionals, and other stakeholders to coordinate communications projects, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Assists in writing, proofreading, and publishing communications, including but not limited to executive correspondence, newsletters, talking points, speeches, video scripts, profiles, articles, and other materials.
  • Identifies, vets, and curates the right voices, stories, and data to bring strategic initiatives to life.
  • Supports executive engagement activities, including meetings, site visits, town halls, videos, and other events by assisting with scheduling, logistics, briefing materials, talking points, and follow-up tasks.
  • Collaborates with media relations, marketing strategy, digital/content, social media, and other communications teams to ensure consistent messaging across channels.
  • Serves as first point-of-contact for certain communications platforms, as assigned.
  • Maintains editorial calendars, communications assets, and related documentation.
  • Supports analytics collection and reporting of communications initiatives.
  • Exercises sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential information and preparing communications.
  • Ensures compliance with editorial guidelines and brand standards.
  • Supports crisis communications, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Experience: 1+ years of relevant experience required.
  • Licensure: None required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience.
  • Experience supporting communications for executives or senior leaders with highly confidential information.
  • Demonstrated experience writing for a variety of audiences and channels.
  • Experience using email marketing platforms, content management systems, or editorial planning tools.
  • Experience in healthcare, higher education, academic medicine, or another complex organization.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
The pay range for this role is $60,236.80 - $72,016.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
