Job description

Description:

Job Title: Assistant Controller

Department: Finance

Position Type: Full-time

Reports To: VP Finance

JOB DESCRIPTION

Hartford Homes is seeking a hands-on, analytical Assistant Controller to join our Finance team. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of meaningful accounting and reporting responsibilities today while preparing for broader leadership opportunities as experienced Finance team members transition toward retirement over the next three to six years.

The Assistant Controller will work directly with our Senior Controller and VP of Finance, supporting multiple homebuilding and land development entities. We are looking for someone who enjoys improving reports, digging into financial results, solving problems, and turning complex data into useful information for business leaders.

This position is designed to provide meaningful upward mobility as senior Finance team members transition toward retirement over approximately the next three to six years. The Assistant Controller will receive direct training from the Senior Controller and will have the opportunity to assume broader accounting leadership, review, reporting, and process-ownership responsibilities. Advancement will depend on sustained performance, leadership readiness, successful knowledge transfer, and business needs.

Help build the future of Hartford Homes!

Why This Role Is Different

• A defined development path with direct training and progressive transfer of Controller-level responsibilities.

• The opportunity to influence how financial and operational information is developed, analyzed, and presented to management.

• Meaningful exposure to homebuilding, land development, project financing, lender draws, forecasting, and multi-entity accounting.

• A role that values advanced Excel, reporting, analysis, sound judgment, and hands-on capability more than a specific credential. A CPA is not required.

• Broad organizational exposure, including serving as a trained backup for payroll processing and supporting selected Human Resources activities.

Responsibilities:

• Perform and increasingly lead the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, variance review, and issue resolution.

• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and executive reporting for homebuilding, land development, and affiliated companies.

• Develop, improve, and maintain Excel-based reports, dashboards, schedules, and analytical models that are accurate, repeatable, documented, and useful to management.

• Analyze cash forecasts, gross margins, budgets, forecasts, communities, projects, and operating results; clearly explain significant changes, trends, risks, and opportunities.

• Use advanced Excel tools such as PivotTables, XLOOKUP or INDEX-MATCH, SUMIFS, dynamic arrays, conditional formatting, charts, and Power Query or comparable data-transformation tools.

• Prepare lender and equity draws for assigned development projects and support cash management, debt reporting, covenant reporting, and banking requirements.

• Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, close checklists, and reporting documentation.

• Support annual audits, tax preparation, insurance reporting, Accounts Payable, and other accounting functions as needed.

• Serve as a trained backup for payroll processing and assist Human Resources with payroll-related reconciliations and reporting, employee data maintenance, and other assigned HR administrative tasks while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate internal controls.

• Participate in structured cross-training with the Senior Controller and assume increasing ownership of assigned responsibilities as proficiency is demonstrated.

Other Duties:

Please note that this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee for this job. Duties, obligations, and activities may change at any time, with or without notice.

Benefits:

  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Spending Accounts, Life, Short & Long-Term Disability
  • Paid Time Off
  • Holidays
  • 401k and match

Pay Range: $90,000-$110,000 annual salary plus quarterly bonus

This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation, and training.

Requirements:

 Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.

• Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including substantial month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliation, and analysis experience.

• Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency and demonstrated experience developing financial reports, models, dashboards, process improvements, or analytical tools.

• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and general ledger accounting.

• Experience in homebuilding, land development, construction, real estate, or another project- or inventory-based industry is strongly preferred.

• Experience with multi-entity accounting, lender draws, budgeting and forecasting, external audits, or accounting-system reporting is preferred.

• Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.

• CPA certification is not required. CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant advanced training is useful but does not replace hands-on capability.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $90,000-$110,000 annually. The actual offer will depend on relevant experience, technical capability, industry knowledge, Excel and reporting proficiency, and overall fit for the responsibilities of the role.
