What is Excel programming?

Excel programming refers to the use of programming techniques, primarily through Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), to automate tasks, manipulate data, and create custom functions or applications within Microsoft Excel. Programmers write macros or scripts to streamline repetitive processes, analyze large datasets, and enhance Excel's built-in capabilities. This skill is valuable for businesses and individuals looking to improve efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in data management and reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Excel Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Excel Programmer, you need strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with expertise in formulas, data analysis, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming, often supported by relevant certifications such as Microsoft Office Specialist. Familiarity with advanced Excel functions, integration with other Microsoft Office tools, and automation through VBA are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills enable efficient data management, streamlined processes, and clear translation of business needs into technical solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by Excel Programmers when working on large-scale data projects?

Excel Programmers often encounter challenges such as managing the performance of complex workbooks, ensuring data integrity when handling large datasets, and maintaining compatibility across different versions of Excel. Collaborating with other team members can also be tricky, especially when multiple people are making changes to the same file. Effective version control, structured documentation, and consistent coding practices are crucial for overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth project delivery.

Position Summary

Lauren is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in Training (EIT) with 2+ years of hands-on design engineering experience supporting pipeline and/or oil & gas facility projects.

This role is design-focused. We are looking for candidates who have contributed directly to in-house engineering design deliverables, not strictly coordination or administrative project support.

The successful candidate will support pipeline systems, piping design, and mechanical equipment across upstream, midstream, and facility projects within a multidisciplinary EPCM environment.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical & Pipeline Design

  • Support the design of pipeline and facility mechanical systems
  • Develop and interpret P&IDs, plot plans, and 3D layouts
  • Assist with piping and pipeline routing, material selection, and pressure system design
  • Perform basic engineering calculations (e.g., line sizing, pressure drop, material selection)
  • Support the specification and selection of:
    • Pumps, compressors, and vessels
    • Heat exchangers
    • Valves and piping systems

Engineering Deliverables

  • Prepare and maintain:
    • Equipment datasheets and specifications
    • Line lists, valve lists, and MTOs/BOMs
  • Support development of engineering drawings and design packages
  • Participate in:
    • Design reviews and HAZOPs
    • Interdisciplinary coordination (process, civil, electrical)

Procurement Support

  • Assist with preparation of:
    • Material Requisitions (MRs)
    • Scopes of Work (SOWs)
  • Support:
    • RFQ/RFP processes
    • Technical Bid Evaluations (TBEs)
  • Review vendor documentation and drawings for compliance

Project Execution & Field Support

  • Provide engineering support during:
    • Construction and installation
    • Commissioning and start-up
  • Assist with field walkdowns, redlines, and as-built updates
  • Support design issue resolution and change management

Qualifications

Experience

  • 2+ years of mechanical engineering experience in oil & gas
  • Experience supporting pipeline and/or facility design (required)
  • Experience within EPC/EPCM or owner/operator environments preferred
  • Exposure to brownfield or greenfield projects is an asset

Technical Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of:
    • Pipeline and piping systems design
    • Mechanical equipment used in oil & gas facilities
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards:
    • CSA Z662
    • ASME B31.3 / B31.1
    • ASME B16 standards
    • Applicable API standards
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • P&IDs
    • Isometrics
    • Equipment and piping specifications

Software

  • Experience with:
    • AutoCAD, Plant 3D, SolidWorks, or similar
    • Navisworks or other 3D coordination tools
    • Microsoft Excel, Word, Bluebeam

Education & Designation

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT)

Core Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, design-focused EPCM environment
  • Effective communicator with internal teams and external vendors
  • Proactive, accountable, and motivated to build technical expertise

Why Lauren

  • Exposure to full lifecycle EPCM projects (concept to commissioning)
  • Direct involvement in pipeline and facility design work
  • Collaborative environment with opportunity for technical growth
