Posting summary
OTM is hiring an Underground Utility Technician / Utility Locator for a dedicated water utility locating program serving Batavia and Genesee County, NY. The role will locate and mark water mains, services, valves, curb boxes, and related underground facilities while managing UDig NY/811 tickets from assignment through closeout. Experienced locators are preferred, and mechanically inclined candidates with related utility, construction, survey, electrical, or water/wastewater field experience may also be considered. This is a stable full-time opportunity with competitive pay, benefits, a company vehicle for work use, and a team that values safety, accuracy, quality, and accountability.
What you will do
  • Screen, route, locate, document, and close out UDig NY/811 tickets.
  • Use GIS maps, utility records, service information, drawings, and ticket location data to determine conflicts.
  • Locate and mark water mains, water services, valves, curb boxes, and related underground facilities accurately and safely.
  • Use electronic locating equipment, tracer wire, paint, flags, photos, and mobile documentation tools.
  • Respond to normal daytime tickets and occasional short-notice/emergency or after-hours assignments; communicate professionally with excavators, utility representatives, clients, and supervisors.
What we are looking for
  • 0-2 years of underground utility locating / UDig NY / 811 experience preferred; related field experience will be considered.
  • Water/wastewater locating experience is especially valuable; experience with gas, electric, sanitary sewer, telecom, construction, survey, or other underground facilities is also relevant.
  • Strong map/GIS reading, mechanical aptitude, documentation, communication, and safe driving skills.
  • Valid New York State driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • A dependable field professional who can work independently, take ownership of ticket quality, and reliably cover Genesee County. Residence within approximately 30 minutes of central Genesee County is strongly preferred.
Compensation
  • $24.00 - $30.00 per hour based on experience.
  • Full-time schedule, typically Monday-Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Occasional short-notice, emergency, after-hours, or weekend response as assigned.
