What does an excavator operator do?

An Excavator Operator is responsible for operating heavy machinery called excavators to move earth, dig trenches, lift materials, and perform site preparation on construction projects. They control the excavator’s boom, bucket, and other attachments with precision to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Excavator Operators also perform routine equipment maintenance, follow safety protocols, and collaborate with site supervisors and other workers. Their work is crucial in building foundations, roads, pipelines, and other infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an excavator operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Excavator Operator, you need a solid understanding of heavy equipment operation, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent with relevant operator certifications. Job description

Moretrench Class A operators are the top skill level of Moretrench heavy equipment operators.

Moretrench, a Keller Company, has been in existence since the late 1800’s.  We perform industrial work in Florida with the majority of our work in the Tampa area.  Fertilizer and power being our primary industries.  The safety of our employees is the number one priority in our company.  We have many long term employees because we pay a competitive rate, have outstanding benefits (including dollar for dollar match on 401K up to 6%) and the vast majority of our employees sleep in their own bed at night.  Our business is stable, year over year, as the fertilizer and power companies still need to support the growth of food and provide energy in all economies.  Therefore, our work avoids the ups and downs that are seen in residential and commercial construction and other industries.  If you will consider a better pay and benefits package, are tired of traveling, sick of the Northeast winters, want an employer that cares about your safety first and want a stable business that’s not always ramping down then ramping up then this is the company for you.  If you are not safety conscious and not an experienced Class A operator, than you need not apply.  We want the best!

  • Work under the direction of the Lead Operator, Earthwork Foreman, Earthwork Superintendent, and/or other designated project leads
  • Follows and maintains safe operating procedures and protocols for all equipment operation and field activity in accordance with Moretrench safety policy and OSHA requirements
  • Safely performs physical duties associated with operation of Moretrench heavy equipment including but not limited to bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, handling, climbing into and out of, and around heavy equipment
  • Works safely in a wide variety of climatic conditions and job site environments commonly found at Moretrench job sites
  • Performs daily greasing and fluid checks and assumes responsibility for the maintenance and safe operation of any and all assigned pieces of equipment
  • Inspects assigned equipment prior to each use; and makes appropriate, accurate, and timely entries into the operator’s checklist / equipment log for each piece of equipment operated
  • Immediately reports any equipment damage, maintenance problems or concerns and safety issues to the Foreman and/or Superintendent
  • Follows direction of the Foreman and/or Superintendent to overcome issues with changing and/or unforeseen field conditions or project scope

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience operating multiple pieces of heavy equipment at Class A operator level
  • Extensive experience in heavy equipment operations involving mass excavations; clearing and grubbing; backfilling and compacting; excavating and pipe laying; and construction and maintenance of embankments, berms, and dikes
  • In the case of a truck loading excavator, the ability to fully and safely load loads trucks in an efficient manner to meet the goals of the project
  • Demonstrate the skills of a finish grade operator (tolerance of 1/10 of a foot or better) on at least one piece of equipment, dozer or excavator
  • Skilled and fully competent in using GPS system as a grading tool to achieve grades
  • Skilled at the practice of operating safely on worksites according to OSHA, MSHA and Moretrench safety protocols and requirements
  • Note that all job site locations are remote and temporary, so a form of transportation is required. The vast majority of our work is within a 1 hour drive of Riverview, FL (just outside of Tampa) so our personnel do very little travel
  • Valid Florida driver’s license, or the equivalent
  • Able to operate heavy machinery for long periods, including evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time
