What are some common day-to-day responsibilities of an eVTOL Pilot?

An eVTOL Pilot is responsible for conducting pre-flight and post-flight checks, monitoring automated flight systems, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards throughout each flight. You will collaborate closely with ground operations staff, maintenance teams, and air traffic controllers to coordinate safe departures, arrivals, and maintenance schedules. The role often involves quickly adapting to changing weather conditions and dynamic urban airspaces, while maintaining up-to-date knowledge on evolving eVTOL procedures and systems. Additionally, pilots may provide feedback on aircraft performance and work with flight operations management to optimize flight paths and passenger experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Evtol Pilot position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an eVTOL Pilot, you need strong piloting skills, a commercial pilot license (CPL) or airline transport pilot license (ATPL), and a solid understanding of aviation safety protocols and airspace regulations. Familiarity with advanced avionics, fly-by-wire systems, and electric propulsion technology is essential, as is training specific to eVTOL platforms. Excellent situational awareness, quick decision-making, and strong communication make candidates stand out. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operations in a rapidly evolving sector of urban air mobility.

What is an eVTOL pilot job?

An eVTOL pilot operates electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which are used for urban air mobility, cargo transport, or specialized missions. These pilots ensure safe flight operations, navigate air traffic, and comply with aviation regulations. Depending on the aircraft, they may operate autonomously assisted vehicles or fully manual flights. eVTOL pilots typically require specialized training, certification, and experience in aviation.

Job description

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate pilot and project manager to join our commercial operations team with a focus on flying for our certificated 14 CFR Part 135 entity as well as driving the development, planning, and execution of air taxi operations in domestic and international markets.ย  You must be a strategic thinker, able to represent Joby's vision to key in-market commercial, political, and regulatory stakeholders. You must also be tactical in execution, capable of completing a range of tasks, from drafting operational manuals to coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders to drive the execution of go-to-market plans.ย

Your prior aviation operations experience will serve as the bedrock from which you will build knowledge of eVTOL operations to become a sought-after subject matter expert. You will offer a credible and informed perspective on - and will drive execution of - the workstreams required to successfully launch a commercial eVTOL air taxi service. Eventually, you may qualify to fly our eVTOL aircraft. This position is located at Joby's offices in Marina, California.ย

Responsibilities
  • 14 CFR Part 135 line pilot operating Joby's conventionally powered fixed-wing aircraftย
  • Learn the systems and operation of Joby's eVTOL aircraft to support operational definitions, development of commercial requirements, and potential training as an eVTOL pilotย
  • Support all aspects of safe and successful eVTOL flight demonstrations including: aircraft certificate of airworthiness, frequency / spectrum allocation, flight test, pilot and engineer staffing plan, concept of operations, logistics, insurance matters, and other supporting requirementsย
  • Collaborate with numerous Joby teams including product, business development, infrastructure, government operations, and policy teams to develop and maintain go-to-market timelines for the launch of commercial air taxi operationsย
  • Represent Joby's air-taxi concept of flight operations to internal and external stakeholders through the application of aviation regulations and flight operations knowledge and experienceย
  • Drive the identification, progress tracking, and completion of objectives that enable the launch of air taxi operations; identifying blockers, dependencies, and sources of execution riskย
  • Develop a deep understanding of commercial aviation air and ground operations in major US and international markets, heliports, and airports, and leverage this perspective to support realizing Joby's eVTOL concept of operationsย
Required
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experienceย
    • Meet experience requirements under 14 CFR Part 135.243 (c)ย
    • FAA Commercial pilot certificate (single engine airplane land)ย
    • At least 1,200 hours of flight time as a pilot, including 500 hours of cross country flight time, 100 hours of night flight time, and 75 hours of actual or simulated instrument time at least 50 hours of which were in actual flightย
    • Hold an airplane instrument ratingย
  • Current first or second class medical certificate (or the ability to attain one prior to employment)ย
  • Impeccable safety record / FAA enforcement recordย
  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple simultaneous and interrelated projects that support a program's objectivesย
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and writtenย
  • Proficiency in common workplace software: Microsoft and/or Google office tools, including working with spreadsheetsย
  • 30% travel required
  • Work full time, on-site in Marina, CAย
Desired
  • Prior experience as a PC-12 pilot in command
  • At least 3,000 hours pilot in command flight timeย
  • Prior experience as a pilot at a 14 CFR Part 135 or 121 air carrier, or foreign equivalentย
  • FAA certified Airline Transport Pilot - airplane multiengineย
  • FAA certified flight instructorย
  • 4+ years operational experience at, or in an organization working with, a major commercial air carrier or major airportย
  • MBA or Advanced Engineering, Aerospace, Aviation or Safety degreeย
  • Expertise in project management tools and conceptsย
