Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Operations Manager, and assigned under direct supervision of the Feet Manager and Shop Foreman, services and repairs city vehicles and other city-owned equipment.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
  • None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Reads and interprets hydraulic and electrical schematics and repairs both systems.
  • Makes repairs and adjustments on hydraulic and air braking systems, steering and suspension systems, lighting system, starting and charging system, heating and air conditioning systems, fuel system, computerized electronic engine systems, and snowplow equipment.
  • Repairs and overhauls all types and sizes of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and drive train components, gang mowers, and specialized turf equipment, etc.
  • Responds to emergency road calls and performs field repairs.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and general tune-ups.
  • Maintains records and work logs including materials used and time spent.
  • Orders parts and supplies. (May pick up as needed.)
  • Performs oxyacetylene and electronic welding, and fabrication and layout for special equipment; cuts and fits material for welding.
  • Installs, removes and repairs light bars and other accessories.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

In addition to the essential functions of Mechanic I, the following are essential functions for the Mechanic II:
  • Reviews, diagnoses, repairs and overhauls all types and sizes of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and drive train components.
  • Diagnoses problems and makes repairs and adjustments on hydraulic and air braking systems, steering and suspension systems, lighting system, starting and charging system, heating and air conditioning systems, fuel system, computerized electronic engine systems, and snow plow equipment.
  • Trains lower level mechanics in more complex maintenance and repair activities and use of tools and shop equipment.

In addition to the essential functions of Mechanic II, the following are essential functions for Mechanic III:
  • Supervises fleet operations when the Fleet Manager and Shop Foreman are absent.
  • Maintains vehicle maintenance records and assists with scheduling for mechanics.
  • Reviews, diagnoses, repairs and overhauls all types and sizes of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and drive train components.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Mechanic I:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • General mechanic experience in both gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair including experience with heavy-duty equipment and trucks.
  • Capable of completing minor field repairs.
  • Maintain vehicle comeback rate of 5% or less.
  • Maintain turnaround time of 7 days per work order.
  • Must hold the following certifications or obtain within 1 year of hire: State Inspection, A/C, ASE T8 Preventative Maintenance.
  • After initial probationary period, must obtain valid Utah Class "B" Commercial Driver License.

In addition to the minimum qualifications of Mechanic I, the following are minimum qualifications for the Mechanic II:
  • Proficient with diagnosing and repairing a wide range of equipment.
  • Capable of completing all field repairs.
  • Must hold the following certifications or obtain within 1 year of hire: ASE T4 Brakes, ASE T5 Suspension.

In addition to the minimum qualifications of Mechanic I and II, the following are minimum qualifications for the Mechanic III:
  • Strong leadership skills and capable of mentoring level I and II mechanics.
  • Proficient with independently diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining all equipment.
  • Capable of completing all field repairs without guidance.
  • Must hold the following certifications or obtain within 1 year of hire: ASE T6 Electrical, ASE T7 HVAC, EVT E4 Body Chassis Ambulance, EVT F1 Inspection Maintenance and Testing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequently works near moving mechanical parts. Regularly walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must drive and sit for long periods of time. Constant exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.) Constant exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty or greasy conditions, and noise. Must lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Must be available to respond to emergency call-outs 24/7 while on-call.
