Job description

Job Description: Environmental Services Supervisor

Department: Cleaning & Environmental Services

Location: The Sanford Center - Bemidji, MN

FLSA STATUS: $17.00-$19.00 hourly- Part Time 20/30 hours weekly

Position Overview

The Environmental Services Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily cleaning operations and housekeeping staff within the hockey arena and convention center. This role ensures that all areas-including event spaces, locker rooms, seating areas, restrooms, concourses, offices, and back-of-house spaces-are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and guest satisfaction. The Supervisor plays a key role in managing staff schedules, coordinating event cleanings, conducting inventory for reorder, stocking of carts and closets, coordinating with maintenance for upkeep and repair of machines, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform cleaning and janitorial tasks as required or assigned. These include, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, vacuuming, pressure washing, laundry, washing and waxing, and operating cleaning equipment.
  • Clean restrooms and replenish supplies.
  • Supervise and direct Environmental Services (EVS) staff in day-to-day and event-based cleaning and sanitation operations.
  • Develop and maintain staff work schedules to support both routine operations and special events.
  • Conduct pre- and post-event inspections to ensure cleanliness standards are met.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate team members to ensure effective and safe cleaning practices.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment; coordinate orders as needed.
  • Monitor and enforce safety protocols, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Respond promptly to cleaning-related service requests during events, and other requests on day-to-day operations as needed.
  • Collaborate with conversion, event operations, facility management, and security teams to coordinate cleaning needs.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and health regulations.
  • Provide leadership and assist as needed with event set-up, tear-down and clean-up during event changeovers, ensuring efficient turnaround of spaces.
  • Prepare reports on staff performance, equipment maintenance, and supply usage.
  • Work flexible, extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or vocational training in facilities management, hospitality, or related field preferred.
  • 2-4 years of supervisory experience in custodial, janitorial, or environmental services-preferably in a sports, entertainment, or convention facility.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, sanitation standards, and use of industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, event-driven environment.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills; ability to motivate and manage diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in scheduling software and basic computer applications (MS Office, Outlook, Excel, work order systems).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on event schedules.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs for extended periods.
  • Tolerant to work under adverse outdoor conditions including extreme heat or cold and exposure to heavy dust, dirt and cleaning agent odors.
  • Comfortable working in varied environments, including ice rinks, large crowds, and noisy conditions.
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning machinery and equipment safely.
