Job description

Job Description
Covenant House New Jersey seeks flexible, reliable, mission-driven event support staff to join an on-call pool that helps plan, prepare, and execute fundraising and community engagement events throughout the year. This role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, calm under pressure, comfortable working behind the scenes and with people, and willing to step into a wide range of event-related responsibilities. Assignments may include event staffing, overnight event support, pre-event logistics, supply organization and transport, participant support, youth and alumni speaker support, and training assistance for Sleep Out participants using fundraising and event technology tools.
Schedule and Availability
This is an on-call, per diem role with hours driven by the CHNJ event calendar. There are no guaranteed weekly hours. Candidates should be available for variable assignments during peak months, including some evenings, weekends, and overnight events.
Key Responsibilities
Event Staffing and On-Site Support
  • Provide on-site staffing support for fundraising and community-facing events.
  • Assist with registration, guest flow, hospitality, set-up, break-down, and event troubleshooting.
  • Support staff, vendors, volunteers, and participants during events and help ensure programs run smoothly, safely, and on schedule.
  • Serve as a calm, professional, and responsive presence during live events, including evening and weekend assignments.

Overnight Event Support
  • Provide staffing support for overnight Sleep Out events, including student Sleep Outs.
  • Help maintain structure, safety, logistics, and participant communication during overnights.
  • Assist with participant needs, transitions in the event schedule, and coordination with CHNJ staff.

Event Logistics and Preparation
  • Support pre-event logistics, including preparing materials, organizing supplies, preparing nametags, packing event kits, and confirming readiness for event day.
  • Day of support with event set-up and break down and volunteer coordination.
  • Support post-event wrap-up, return of supplies, and reorganization of materials for future use.
  • Help inventory, organize, store, transport, load, and unload supplies, signage, collateral, and participant materials.

Youth and Alumni Speaker Support
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with Covenant House youth and alumni who participate in events.
  • Help support youth and alumni speakers before, during, and after events in coordination with CHNJ staff.

What Success Looks Like
  • Reliable availability during peak event periods, including occasional overnight shifts
  • Strong execution and follow-through on assigned responsibilities.
  • Smooth logistical support before, during, and after events.
  • Positive experience for participants, speakers, donors, and staff.
  • Professional and respectful support of youth and alumni involved in events.

We are currently looking for multiple per-diems in both the Newark, NJ & Atlantic City NJ area
Hourly Rate: $18.71
Experience and Skills
  • Support for Covenant House New Jersey's mission serving youth experiencing homelessness and survivors of human trafficking.
  • Experience in events, hospitality, nonprofit programs, customer service, community engagement, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work respectfully with donors, volunteers, youth and alumni,.
  • Comfort with basic technology and ability to help others use online tools and platforms.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts
  • Valid driver's license and transportation required.
