Job description

Job Summary:

The Event Team is part of the dynamic customer service team at Great Lakes Aquarium. Event team members work collaboratively and independently to assist guests during venue rentals and internal special events. Hours vary and are based on event needs. Event staff generally work evenings and weekends.


Aspects of the job include but are not limited to:

  • Event set up and take down
  • Performing cleaning and upkeep duties
  • Bartending (training provided)
    • Effectively using a computerized point of sale system to sell beverages during events
    • Embracing duties related to the inherent responsibility of serving alcohol such as age verification, avoiding over-service, etc.
  • Inventory management
  • Facilitating activity stations for Aquarium-sponsored events
  • Being an ambassador for the Aquarium at off-site events
  • Providing additional support to the Event Coordinator and/or Event Manager as requested


Required Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function listed above satisfactorily. Additionally, the requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Fun, positive, and outgoing personality
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to analyze and solve problems effectively
  • Willingness to help out where needed
  • Ability to work in a team environment or individually with minimal to moderate supervision
  • Familiarity with handling cash and computerized point of sale systems
  • Successful completion of a background check


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Retail or customer service experience
  • Bartending experience


Physical Requirements and/or Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires being on your feet for a long period of time. While performing the duties of this job, employees may be required to work in both indoor and outdoor settings and also may be required to lift boxes weighing 30 lbs or more. The individual is regularly required to communicate with staff and guests. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Compensation and Benefits

Starting rate is $12.00/hr. After successfully completing 300 hours of work, staff will receive an automatic pay increase of $0.50/hr. Staff also have opportunities for promotion into lead positions and receive annual merit increases. This is a part-time position. Benefits include: Earned Sick and Safe Time in keeping with the City of Duluth's ordinance, free waterfront parking when space is available, discount on Aquarium programs and gift shop items, free admission to the Aquarium, and discounts at local attractions.
