Job Overview
The Mobile Trailer Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and emergency roadside service on commercial trailers at customer locations. This position serves as a direct representative of the company in the field and is expected to provide safe, efficient, and high-quality service while maintaining exceptional customer relationships.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on commercial trailers.
  • Diagnose and repair trailer systems including:
    • Brake systems
    • Suspension systems
    • Wheel-end assemblies
    • Landing gear
    • Electrical systems
    • Lighting systems
    • Air systems
    • Doors and door hardware
    • Liftgates (if applicable)
    • Trailer structural components
  • Perform DOT inspections and complete required documentation.
  • Repair or replace damaged trailer components including floors, roofs, side panels, and rear frames.
  • Conduct welding, fabrication, and structural repairs as required.
  • Complete tire-related service when assigned.
  • Travel to customer locations to perform scheduled and emergency repairs.
  • Safely operate company service vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies on assigned service vehicles.
  • Ensure company vehicles remain clean, organized, and properly maintained.
  • Respond to road service calls in a timely and professional manner.
  • Communicate repair status, estimated completion times, and recommendations to customers and management.
  • Accurately document labor hours, repairs performed, parts used, and inspection findings.
  • Complete work orders, repair orders, DOT inspection reports, and other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintain compliance with company procedures regarding timekeeping, parts usage, and billing documentation.
  • Utilize company software, mobile applications, and communication systems to manage work assignments and submit required documentation.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment at customer locations and within company vehicles.
  • Report accidents, injuries, equipment damage, and safety concerns immediately.
  • Represent the company professionally while working at customer locations.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with customers.
  • Clearly communicate repair findings, recommendations, and service needs.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service while promoting company values and standards.
  • Work collaboratively with dispatch, service management, parts personnel, and fellow technicians.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced technicians as requested.
  • Participate in company meetings, training programs, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Technical or vocational training in trailer repair or related field preferred.
  • Previous trailer repair experience preferred.
  • Experience with brake systems, suspension systems, electrical diagnostics, and welding preferred.
  • Mobile service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of commercial trailer systems and repair procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair procedures.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to meet company driving requirements and maintain insurability.
  • DOT Annual Inspection Certification preferred.
  • Brake Certification preferred.
  • Welding certifications preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and carry more than 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.
  • Work in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and underneath trailers.

Work Environment
This position primarily works in a mobile field service environment at customer locations, roadside locations, fleet yards, warehouses, distribution centers, and other outdoor work environments. Work may be performed during varying weather conditions and may require occasional overtime, evening, weekend, or emergency service work based on business needs.
