Position Summary

SOWEGA Rising, Inc. is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization whose mission is to mobilize people and resources to improve the quality of life for marginalized Southwest Georgians. SOWEGA Rising, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer with equity at the center of all that we do.
SOWEGA Rising, Inc. seeks motivated, community-minded individuals to serve as Community Canvassers. Community Canvassers serve as the frontline representatives of SOWEGA Rising in the community, engaging residents in direct conversations about civic participation, voter registration, and issues affecting Southwest Georgia. Canvassers conduct field outreach, distribute materials, and participate in community events to advance SOWEGA Rising’s mission.
This is a part-time, temporary, W-2 employee position. All canvassers are employees of SOWEGA Rising, Inc. and will receive a W-2 at year-end. Canvassers are paid at an hourly rate and are required to check in and check out with their supervisor for each shift.
Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach & Canvassing

  • Conduct door-to-door canvassing in designated communities to engage residents on civic issues, voter registration, and community advocacy priorities.
  • Attend and participate in community events, town halls, and outreach activities as directed by SOWEGA Rising leadership.
  • Distribute SOWEGA Rising flyers, materials, and informational resources to community members.
  • Engage residents in respectful, nonpartisan conversations about issues in the community, the importance of voting, and how to register to vote.
  • Conduct virtual outreach including phone banking and text banking.
Compliance & Professional Conduct

  • Adhere strictly to SOWEGA Rising’s nonpartisan policy — canvassers must not discuss, promote, or support any political candidate at any time during their employment.
  • Canvassers may not be concurrently employed by or affiliated with any agency or organization that supports political candidates.
  • Check in with the assigned supervisor before and after each shift; all time must be reported to the supervisor for payroll processing.
  • Attend all mandatory shift assignments; communicate any scheduling conflicts promptly to your supervisor.
  • Represent SOWEGA Rising professionally and respectfully in all community interactions.
Data Tracking & Reporting

  • Record all outreach contacts and activities using SOWEGA Rising-provided tracking tools or canvassing platforms.
  • Submit accurate shift reports and attendance records as required by the supervisor.
  • Report any concerns, incidents, or challenges encountered in the field to the supervisor immediately.
Employment & Scheduling Details
This is an at-will, part-time, temporary position. Employment may be terminated at any time by the canvasser or by SOWEGA Rising with written notice. Continued employment is contingent upon adherence to SOWEGA Rising’s conduct policies, nonpartisan requirements, and attendance expectations.
  • Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour
  • 20-25 hours per week
  • Shifts are mandatory and will be communicated in advance by your supervisor.
  • Payment is issued bi-weekly. Timely submission of accurate timesheets is a requirement of the position.
  • All necessary supplies will be provided by SOWEGA Rising, including clipboards, pens, outreach materials, masks, gloves, and a SOWEGA Rising t-shirt.
Required Skills & Qualifications
No prior canvassing experience required — all training will be provided by SOWEGA Rising.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage comfortably with community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to walk for extended periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to report to assigned canvassing locations on time.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community engagement, civic participation, or social justice is a plus.
  • Ability to follow directions, communicate proactively, and work as part of a team.
  • Must comply with SOWEGA Rising’s nonpartisan policy throughout the term of employment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily conducted in the field — outdoors in community neighborhoods, at community events, and at public gatherings.
  • Canvassers must be able to walk, stand, and remain active for extended periods during each shift.
  • Canvassers must be able to carry and distribute materials (up to 35 pounds of outreach supplies).
  • Occasional evening or weekend shifts may be required based on program scheduling.
  • Virtual outreach shifts (phone banking or texting) may be assigned when field canvassing is not possible.
Equal Employment Opportunity Statement

SOWEGA Rising, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a diverse, inclusive workplace. We strongly encourage applications from women, people of color, bilingual/bicultural individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others from historically marginalized groups.
No applicant will be discriminated against based on race, religion, sex, national origin, ethnicity, age, disability, political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, pregnancy, or any other protected status. Reasonable accommodations are available throughout the application and employment process.
