Legal Intern
Paths is a full-scale, vertically integrated affordable housing developer, builder, and operator. Since 2004, the Paths team has created and preserved high-quality, affordable housing across the U.S. that enhances communities and helps residents build better lives. With over 16,000 units across 13 states under management and more than 600 employees, Paths manages a suite of capabilities spanning the entire property life cycle, including development, construction, property management, maintenance, and security.

Summary/Objective: The Legal Intern will provide administrative and litigation support to the Legal Department, assisting attorneys with civil litigation matters related to affordable housing and property management. This internship offers hands-on experience in legal research, document preparation, court scheduling, case management, and real estate operations. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and eager to gain practical experience in a fast-paced legal environment.

Classification : Non-exempt (overtime eligible); Non-Union

Essential function/Responsibilities: duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain attorney calendars by tracking upcoming court dates, hearings, filing deadlines, and case milestones.
  • Gather, organize, and review documents needed to prepare attorneys for civil litigation, hearings, and court appearances.
  • Assist with case file management by maintaining accurate and organized electronic and physical records.
  • Review and enter case-related information into the company's real estate management software and legal tracking systems.
  • Draft legal documents for attorney review, including rent demands, notices, petitions, motions, affidavits, and correspondence.
  • Prepare litigation files and supporting exhibits for court proceedings.
  • Conduct legal and factual research as assigned.
  • Assist with document collection and organization for discovery requests and responses.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to obtain records and documentation needed for legal matters.
  • Monitor case status and update internal tracking systems to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive legal and tenant information.
  • Provide administrative support to attorneys and the Legal Department as needed.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program, paralegal program, or Juris Doctor (J.D.) program.
  • Interest in real estate law, landlord-tenant law, civil litigation, or affordable housing is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Professional demeanor and willingness to learn.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with attorneys and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong proofreading and document formatting skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Experience with legal case management or property management software is a plus but not required.
