Education Requirements
Formal training and degrees in your discipline are required, with at least a Bachelor's degree; a Master's degree preferred.
 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications: A minimum of 1-3 years of successful teaching experience in a college or music school environment is required. Candidates should demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for engaging with diverse groups of people, including young children, adults, seniors, and local organizations. Applicants must possess advanced proficiency in at least one of the following writing styles: fiction, nonfiction, script-writing, comedy, poetry, song lyrics, professional development, technical writing, blogging, article composition, essay writing, copy-editing, indexing, business writing, children's literature, screenwriting, creative writing, documentary, memoir, play-writing, TV and/or film writing, among others.

The ideal candidate will be adept at clearly explaining concepts and techniques to students of varying ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. A strong dedication to teaching and a sincere interest in supporting lifelong learning for individual students are essential. Excellent communication skills, responsiveness to emails, openness to new ideas, initiative, and a willingness to promote and market personal classes are required. The ability to teach multiple disciplines is advantageous. Experience teaching online is necessary, and proficiency with virtual meeting applications is mandatory. Candidates must have a modern computer equipped with a microphone and camera for live online instruction, be capable of recording lectures on video, and create course materials using Blackboard. If not already familiar with Blackboard, applicants should be willing to participate in training sessions. Competency with email, social media platforms, text messaging, screen sharing, and content sharing is also required.

The Harper College Community Music and Arts Center is seeking a part-time writing instructor to teach group classes for adults and children, starting in January 2026. Employment for this role depends on class enrollment and may include evening and weekend hours.

The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching weekly non-credit classes and supporting community education programs.
