What is ETS Educational Testing Service?

ETS, or Educational Testing Service, is a nonprofit organization that develops, administers, and scores standardized tests and assessments. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, ETS is known for creating tests like the TOEFL, GRE, and Praxis, which are widely used for admissions and certification purposes. ETS also conducts educational research and provides assessment-related services to schools, governments, and other organizations around the world.

What are some common challenges faced by test developers at ETS Educational Testing Service, and how can new hires best prepare for them?

Test developers at ETS often encounter challenges such as balancing rigorous assessment standards with fairness, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring test questions are free from bias. New hires can best prepare by familiarizing themselves with psychometric principles, staying updated on best practices in educational measurement, and developing strong project management skills. Collaborating closely with subject matter experts and editors is crucial to ensure the highest quality of test content and to meet ETS's standards for validity and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ETS test developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ETS Test Developer, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in educational measurement or psychometrics, and typically a degree in education, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with test development software, statistical analysis tools like SPSS or SAS, and knowledge of industry standards such as the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing are essential. Attention to detail, clear written communication, and collaboration abilities are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the creation of valid, reliable, and fair assessments that uphold ETS's reputation and support educational outcomes.
