To excel as a Remote ETL Developer, you need strong expertise in data warehousing, ETL processes, and proficiency in SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ETL tools like Informatica, Talend, or SSIS, as well as experience with cloud platforms and database technologies, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and troubleshooting data issues. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient data integration and support critical business intelligence initiatives in a remote work environment.

What are ETL Developers?

ETL Developers are IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain systems for extracting, transforming, and loading data from various sources into a centralized data warehouse or database. They work with different data formats and tools to ensure data is accurately and efficiently processed for business intelligence and analytics. Remote ETL Developers perform these tasks from a location outside the employer’s office, using collaboration tools and secure connections to manage data workflows.

How to Become an ETL Developer Who Works Remotely

The minimum qualifications for an ETL developer include a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field. Strong communication skills are important to relay issues that require attention accurately. Experience with NoSQL databases and PL/SQL development is beneficial. It is also helpful to have experience retrieving data from multiple data source types, interfacing with business users, and using dimensional modeling. You can stand out above other candidates if you have experience with Hadoop components, including HBase, Sqoop, HDFS, Hive, and Spark, experience with .NET or Java, and knowledge of SSAS, OLAP, and MDX.

How do ETL Developers working remotely typically collaborate with data engineers and analysts to ensure data quality and project success?

Remote ETL Developers usually collaborate closely with data engineers and analysts through virtual meetings, shared project management tools, and version-controlled code repositories. Regular stand-ups and agile sprints help align team members on data requirements, transformation logic, and delivery timelines. Effective communication and thorough documentation are crucial to address data quality issues promptly and to ensure that business objectives are met. Most teams rely on platforms like Slack, Jira, and GitHub to maintain transparency and streamline workflow across different locations.

OHSU's Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics (BIAA) team is seeking a Senior Application Engineer to support population health, value-based care, financial analytics, and data-driven clinical operations across the OHSU Health System. This remote role plays a critical part in developing, optimizing, and supporting our enterprise data warehouse solutions-including Epic Caboodle, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and modern Azure-based ETL platforms.

You'll design and build scalable data structures, create and maintain ETL pipelines, support analytics for clinical and operational leaders, and ensure the accuracy, reliability, and security of healthcare encounters, financial, and claims data. This is a highly technical, hands-on engineering role suited for candidates who thrive in complex healthcare data environments.

Function/Duties of Position

Data Engineering and ETL Development (Caboodle, Fabric, Azure)

  • Design, develop, and optimize ETL pipelines using Epic Caboodle Console, SQL Server SSIS, Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Build and maintain star-schema data structures including facts, dimensions, SCDs, aggregates, and bridge tables.
  • Perform advanced SQL / T-SQL coding, optimization, data profiling, validation, and source-totarget mapping.
  • Support secure ingestion and exchange of data with third-party partners, including SFTP/PGP workflows.
  • Troubleshoot ETL failures, data anomalies, and performance issues across hybrid on-prem and cloud pipelines.

Business Intelligence and Analytics Engineering

  • Develop user-facing BI assets, including Power BI data models, dashboards, and semantic layers.
  • Build and maintain Epic SlicerDicer models and analytic structures within Caboodle.
  • Collaborate with population health leaders, analysts, and clinicians to develop meaningful, actionable metrics.

Operational Support and Engineering Quality

  • Participate in system upgrades, regression testing, cutover planning, and SDLC/Agile processes.
  • Document technical design, data models, and pipeline logic for long-term operational support.
  • Provide technical guidance and consultation to BI developers, analysts, and end users.
Required Qualifications

Education

One of the following:

  • Bachelor's in computer science, business, or related field + 8 years of IT experience or a combination of clinical or operational environments.
  • Associate's degree + 9 years of IT experience or a combination of clinical or operational environments.
  • 10 years IT, clinical, or operational healthcare experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate's degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor's degree.

Experience

  • 2+ years as an Application Engineer/Developer using SQL Server SSIS.
  • 2+ years of advanced SQL or TSQL development and performance tuning.
  • Experience with ETL development, dimensional modeling, metadata management, and technical documentation.
  • 3+ years of experience working in relational databases.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong SQL coding and troubleshooting.
  • Deep understanding of data warehousing, star-schema modeling, and SCD methodology.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, document systems thoroughly, and follow SDLC or Agile practices.
  • Analytical problemsolving and strong communication skills.

Certifications

  • Epic Caboodle Developer proficiency or certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Microsoft Power BI or Fabric certification within 9 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Epic Caboodle and/or Epic Clarity development experience.
  • Healthcare data experience, including claims.
