Estimation Intern information

What is an estimation intern?

An Estimation Intern is a student or recent graduate who assists with the process of estimating project costs, resources, and timelines, typically in industries like construction, engineering, or manufacturing. They work under the supervision of experienced estimators to analyze project plans, gather data, and prepare cost estimates. Estimation Interns gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software, collaborate with various teams, and learn about budgeting and project management. This role helps them develop analytical, technical, and communication skills essential for a career in project estimation.

What are some common challenges an estimation intern may face when working on project bids?

As an Estimation Intern, you may encounter challenges such as interpreting incomplete project documentation, balancing accuracy with tight deadlines, and communicating with multiple departments to gather necessary information. It's common to collaborate closely with senior estimators, project managers, and engineers to clarify project requirements and validate quantities or costs. Developing strong attention to detail and effective communication skills will help you navigate these challenges and contribute meaningfully to the team’s bidding process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an estimation intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Estimation Intern, you need a solid grasp of mathematics, analytical thinking, and attention to detail, usually supported by coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related field. Familiarity with estimation software (like Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or MS Excel) and the ability to interpret technical drawings are commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help you collaborate effectively with project teams and manage multiple tasks. These skills are vital for producing accurate cost estimates, supporting successful project bids, and ensuring project feasibility.

What is the difference between Estimation Intern vs Cost Estimator?

AspectEstimation InternCost Estimator
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in engineering, construction management, or related fieldBachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or related field; certifications like CPC or CPE may be preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in construction or engineering firms, assisting with preliminary estimatesFull-time role, responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for projects
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in construction, engineering, and architecture firms as a learning positionCommon in construction, manufacturing, and engineering industries for project budgeting

While both roles involve cost assessment, an Estimation Intern typically supports senior estimators by gathering data and preparing preliminary estimates during their training period. A Cost Estimator is a full-time professional responsible for detailed, accurate project cost calculations, often with more experience and responsibility.

Job description

Commercial Estimating Intern
From Onboarding to Premier Estimates
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Department: Estimating
Reports To: Estimating Manager / Senior Estimator
Program Length: 13 Weeks
Employment Type: Internship
Launch Your Career in Commercial Roofing Estimating
Diversified Roofing is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Commercial Estimating Intern to join our Estimating Department. This structured 13-week internship provides hands-on training in commercial roofing estimation, project analysis, quantity takeoffs, and construction costing.
This is more than a data-entry internship. Our goal is to develop future estimators who understand commercial roofing systems, project execution, risk assessment, and how accurate estimates drive successful and profitable projects.
Working alongside experienced estimators, you'll gain real-world experience reviewing construction documents, performing takeoffs, analyzing costs, and learning industry-leading estimating practices using EDGE Estimating Software.
By the end of the program, successful interns will be capable of independently completing portions of estimates and preparing smaller project estimates for review by senior estimating professionals.
What You'll Learn
  • Commercial roofing systems, materials, terminology, and installation methods.
  • Reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Quantity takeoff techniques and estimating best practices.
  • Material, labor, equipment, freight, and subcontractor cost analysis.
  • Risk identification, scope development, and proposal preparation.
  • Vendor and subcontractor pricing coordination.
  • Industry-standard estimating processes using EDGE software.
  • Quality control procedures that ensure estimating accuracy and completeness.
Key Responsibilities
  • Learn company estimating standards and the components of a Premier Estimate.
  • Develop proficiency in EDGE Estimating Software.
  • Review plans, specifications, addenda, bid invitations, and contract documents.
  • Perform digital takeoffs for roofing systems, flashings, drains, sheet metal, insulation, and related scope items.
  • Assist in calculating material quantities, labor requirements, equipment needs, freight, and project costs.
  • Request, organize, and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing.
  • Identify scope gaps, clarifications, exclusions, and potential project risks.
  • Support estimate reviews and quality-control checks.
  • Participate in project turnover and sales-to-production handoff meetings when appropriate.
  • Analyze completed projects to understand how estimating decisions impact field execution and profitability.
  • Maintain organized estimating files and documentation.
  • Assist in documenting estimating procedures and EDGE workflows.
  • Demonstrate increasing accuracy, accountability, ownership, and independence throughout the internship.
Qualifications
  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Strong math, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn.
  • Interest in construction, estimating, project management, or roofing preferred.
Success Profile The ideal candidate is curious, detail-oriented, organized, coachable, and eager to learn. Successful interns prioritize accuracy over speed, take ownership of their work, and continuously improve through feedback and hands-on experience.
What You'll Gain
  • Hands-on experience with commercial roofing estimating.
  • Training from experienced estimating professionals.
  • Exposure to real construction projects and bidding processes.
  • Proficiency with industry-leading estimating software.
  • A strong foundation for careers in estimating, project management, and construction operations.
  • Potential opportunities for future growth within Diversified Roofing.
