What does an estimating coordinator do?

An Estimating Coordinator is responsible for supporting the estimating team in preparing cost estimates for construction or manufacturing projects. They gather and organize project information, review drawings and specifications, communicate with suppliers and subcontractors for pricing, and ensure that all documentation is accurate and complete. Their role is crucial in helping the company submit competitive bids by ensuring that estimates are thorough and deadlines are met. Estimating Coordinators also maintain records of past estimates and help track project costs throughout the bidding process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an estimating coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Estimating Coordinator, you need a solid understanding of construction processes, cost estimation, and project documentation, often backed by a degree in construction management or a related field. Familiarity with estimation software like Bluebeam, ProEst, or Microsoft Excel, along with experience interpreting blueprints and bid documents, is crucial. Attention to detail, organization, and strong communication skills make candidates stand out by ensuring accuracy and effective collaboration with project teams. These skills and qualities are essential for producing competitive bids, minimizing risk, and supporting successful project outcomes.

How does an estimating coordinator typically collaborate with project managers and other departments during the bidding process?

An Estimating Coordinator plays a key role in facilitating communication between the estimating team, project managers, and other departments such as procurement and engineering. They gather and organize relevant project documentation, clarify bid requirements, and ensure that all stakeholders have up-to-date information. By coordinating meetings, tracking deadlines, and distributing bid documents, Estimating Coordinators help streamline the process and reduce the risk of errors or omissions in the final proposal. This collaborative environment fosters teamwork and ensures that bids are both accurate and competitive.
