What is an esthetician apprentice?

An Esthetician Apprentice is an individual who is training under the supervision of a licensed esthetician to learn the skills and techniques necessary for a career in skincare. Apprenticeships provide hands-on experience in services such as facials, waxing, makeup application, and other skincare treatments. During the apprenticeship, individuals gain practical knowledge and fulfill the required hours to be eligible for licensure. This pathway allows aspiring estheticians to learn directly in a spa or clinic setting while preparing for state board exams.

What responsibilities can I expect as an esthetician apprentice, and how will I work alongside licensed estheticians?

As an Esthetician Apprentice, you'll typically assist licensed estheticians with client services such as facials, waxing, and skincare consultations, while also learning proper sanitation and client care techniques. You may be tasked with preparing treatment rooms, maintaining inventory, and observing or performing treatments under supervision. Apprentices work closely with experienced estheticians, receiving ongoing feedback and mentorship to build confidence and skill in real-world settings. Collaboration is key, and you'll often participate in team meetings and training sessions to stay updated on best practices and emerging trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an esthetician apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Esthetician Apprentice, you need a foundational knowledge of skin care, basic anatomy, and sanitation practices, typically gained through enrollment in a state-approved esthetics program. Familiarity with professional-grade skin care products, facial equipment, and appointment scheduling software is often required. Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help build client trust and ensure positive experiences. These skills are crucial for learning advanced techniques, maintaining client safety, and succeeding in a client-focused environment.

What is the difference between Esthetician Apprentice vs Esthetician?

Job description

About the role

We are looking for a LICENSED COSMETOLOGIST who enjoys shampooing, scalp care, finishing services and making guests feel refreshed and cared for. If you've worked as a shampoo technician, salon assistant, blow dry stylist, cosmetologist, spa therapist or head spa practitioner, this role may be an excellent fit.

Perfect for candidates with experience in: salons, spas, beauty retail, esthetics, luxury hospitality, boutique hotels, wellness clinics, concierge services or premium customer service.

Complete the guest experience beautifully

ROOT Head Spa is creating a thoughtful new approach to scalp care, restorative beauty, hospitality and professional home care.

We are looking for a licensed cosmetologist who enjoys shampooing, scalp cleansing, product application, finishing and taking care of the details that complete an exceptional guest experience.

Known within ROOT as the Jr. Cleanse & Finish Specialist, you will support important stages of the guest journey while creating service capacity for the entire team. This is not a background position. You may be one of the final people a guest interacts with, and the care, product guidance and attention you provide will shape what they remember.

Required qualifications

  • Active California cosmetologist license in good standing.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Comfortable performing shampooing, scalp cleansing and approved finishing services.
  • Available for the required schedule, including evenings and weekends as assigned.
  • Able to complete mandatory paid ROOT training and technical assessments.
  • Able to follow timing, sanitation and quality standards.
  • Able to stand for extended periods and perform hands-on services.
  • Comfortable educating guests about professional products.
  • Willing to contribute to service, rebooking and retail goals.

Preferred experience and assets

  • Experience using Zenoti or other salon booking software.
  • Professional haircare or scalp-care product knowledge.
  • Salon assistant, shampoo technician or blow-dry experience.
  • Cosmetology school clinic or apprenticeship experience.
  • Spa, wellness or luxury hospitality experience.
  • Experience with retail, product demonstrations or home-care recommendations.

This job may be for you if...

You enjoy making people feel refreshed, comfortable and put together. You take pride in finishing details and like seeing a service completed thoughtfully.

You are calm and friendly, but you also have enough energy to keep the day moving. You work efficiently without making people feel hurried.

You enjoy product knowledge and like explaining what was used, why it was chosen and how a guest can care for their scalp or hair at home.

What you will do

  • Perform approved shampooing and scalp-cleansing services.
  • Support treatment preparation and professional product application.
  • Complete ROOT finishing and guest-refresh rituals.
  • Prepare cleansing, finishing and back-bar areas.
  • Maintain towels, robes, linens and guest supplies.
  • Follow sanitation, disinfection and equipment-care standards.
  • Explain the products used and make honest home-care recommendations.
  • Support retail purchases and transactions when required.
  • Record service and product information accurately in Zenoti or other salon booking software.
  • Support room turnover, appointment flow, rebooking and a warm guest departure.
  • Participate in product education and technical training.

Hospitality at ROOT

A guest should never feel handed off or passed around. Your role is to make transitions feel natural and help guests know what is happening next.

You are warm without overwhelming people. You can make conversation, but you can also recognize when a guest wants quiet. Hospitality at ROOT means helping people feel comfortable without making the experience feel scripted.

Retail and product education

  • Develop strong knowledge of ROOT's retail collection.
  • Understand the products used during each service.
  • Explain product use clearly and accurately.
  • Demonstrate appropriate application where helpful.
  • Make personalized recommendations rather than generic sales pitches.
  • Support retail displays, testers and product presentation.
  • Contribute to individual and shared retail goals.

Growth, Recognition & Career Development

At ROOT, we believe professional growth begins with personal growth.

We are committed to creating an environment where people feel supported, challenged and inspired to become the best version of themselves. Through continuous learning, meaningful feedback and shared experiences, we help our team members build confidence, develop mastery and grow as both professionals and people.

Our growth bands provide a visible pathway for development, recognizing growth in skill, contribution, leadership and guest care. Our goal is to help you build a meaningful career, not just hold a position.

Join ROOT

Every great guest experience begins with the right team. It begins with people like you.

Immediate openings are available. Paid training begins this summer, with our Los Angeles location opening in early fall.

We are ready to meet you.

About ROOT

At ROOT, we believe caring for others begins by caring for the people who make that experience possible.

Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of pause and presence, ROOT was created as a place where guests can slow down, reconnect and return to self. We often describe our experience simply: inhale, exhale. Every detail, from the welcome they receive to the treatment they experience, is designed to help guests leave feeling lighter, calmer and more connected than when they arrived.

We believe that same philosophy should exist behind the scenes.

Our team is rooted in continuous learning, meaningful relationships and professional growth. We believe in recognizing people who demonstrate curiosity, consistency, kindness and a commitment to excellence. As ROOT grows, we want our team members to grow with us through clear opportunities for learning, increased responsibility and career development.

If you are looking for more than your next job, we would love to meet you.
