Job description

Position Overview
The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San Jose State University in downtown San Jose, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Esports and Gaming Manager, the Esports Student Supervisor is responsible for providing general supervision in relation to Esports and Gaming within Spartan Recreations and is responsible for providing excellent customer service and has a solid understanding of Esports programs and services. The Esports and Gaming Student Supervisor is responsible to support Student Union, Inc. mission to connect, engage, and inspire Spartan pride within the SJSU Community.

Essential Functions and Tasks
  • Support Esports Department with general duties including, but not limited to: 
    • Serves as the first point of contact; answers      questions, provides directions and assists staff, students and guests in-person, by phone and email in a positive and supportive manner.
    • Scheduling functions, coordinates with clients regarding space needs, policies and procedures, reservations process, verbally or in writing.
    • Supervision of esports and gaming events held within and outside of the Esports facility      
    • Assists with information gathering and the approval process for student groups, campus departments and other entities looking to reserve spaces within the Esports and Gaming facility.
    • Assist with operational duties within the Esports and Gaming facility
  • Facilitate general team operations for all supported titles within the Esports department, including but not limited to:
    • Insuring all supported titles are signed up for competitions 
    • Process of entry fees and relay any related documents to the Esports and Gaming Manager     
    • Assist with recruiting and tryout process for all supported titles
    • Oversee online interactions via Discord 
    • Schedule computer stations for practice times within the Esports and Gaming for supported titles
  • Managing stream production and content for supported titles, including but not limited to:
    • Ensure quality production of streamed events for supported titles 
    • Scheduling of stream events for supported titles 
    • Recording, editing, and posting of content on social media for supported titles 
    • Conceptualizing, composing, designing, and delivering digital marketing media and graphic design materials. 
    • Work alongside Esports and Gaming Manager to ensure both stream and social media goals are being met for the program
  • Confidentiality when working with esports assets and equipment, including but not limited to logins, digital files, and records.
  • Provide basic IT support to production staff, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues. Assist in the setup and maintenance of production-related IT systems and equipment. Liaise with the IT department for escalated technical issues and system upgrades.
  • Responsible for enforcing SRAC and University policies and procedures. 
  • Attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings, training days, and workshops.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred. Online  certifications will not be accepted. (May be obtained as part of training/onboarding.) 
  • Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half-time* during the academic term.
    • *Half-time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half-time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working in a competitive sport, e-sport, or team operations environment.  
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of Esports and/or team operations 
  • Basic understanding of Twitch/OBS/X/Instagram/YouTube along with other  streaming and content related programs 
  • Knowledge of program policies and procedures and ability to manage situations which  require resolution and problem solving.  
  • Experience in computer applications such as: Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets,  Forms, etc.), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) 
  • Computer skills - knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign,  Lightroom, Premiere Pro)  
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, ability to manage conflicts. 
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude. 
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • The position works mainly in an indoor, recreation facility program-oriented  environment, with some outside Esports events and tabling opportunities 
  • The physical demands of this position are described below 
    • Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting,  crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot). 
    • Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or  traditional walking and playing surfaces. 
    • Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50- 75 lbs. 
    • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone. 
    • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrists to operate a computer keyboard and  calculator. 
  • In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.,  Monday - Friday, and may require evening and weekend work as needed. 
    • When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per  week (among all concurrent positions). 
    • When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in  excess of 40 hours per week.
  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial  Welfare Commission Orders. 

Benefits
This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.

Background Check and Fingerprinting
Student Union employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors and cash management will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work performed. In some cases, the background check will include a credit check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background.

Within the first month, all employees are required to complete the following compliance online training session through CSU Learn, the University's employee training platform. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from CSULearning@sjsu.edu
