What is an ESOL assistant?

ESOL Assistants are educational professionals who support students learning English as a Second or Other Language. They work closely with teachers to help non-native English speakers improve their language skills, understand classroom material, and integrate into the school environment. Their responsibilities may include providing one-on-one or small group instruction, assisting with lesson preparation, and helping students with reading, writing, and speaking English. ESOL Assistants also support cultural understanding and encourage students’ confidence in using English in various situations.

An ESOL Assistant works closely with classroom teachers to provide targeted support to students learning English as a second language. Daily responsibilities often include helping students understand lesson material, providing individualized or small group instruction, and assisting with language development activities. ESOL Assistants also help monitor student progress, adapt resources to meet diverse needs, and facilitate communication between ESOL students, teachers, and sometimes parents. This collaborative role is essential in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for non-native English speakers.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an ESOL assistant?
