Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:ย  Madison County Public Schools is seeking an Anticipated English as a Second Language Teacher for K-12 for the 2026-2027 school year. The ESL teacher will often teach students in a pullout program focusing on language arts instruction in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary acquisition. ESL teachers will also work within classrooms in an inclusion model.ย  The successful candidate will implement strategies to help ESL learners at each level of development within the program. At the secondary level, ESL teachers teach specific ESL courses that have been developed in English and in related content areas and /or work with teachers in a collaborative model.ย 

This position works in each of our schools daily.

REQUIRED:

  • A Collegiate or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in English as a Second Language PreK-12
  • Must have considerable experience creating an academic environment that will motivate students at different levels of learning and the ability to make learning student-centered.ย 
  • Must be able to analyze and evaluate students' classwork, papers and assignments and provide developmentally appropriate feedback.ย 
  • Ability to create student schedules to maximize learning across grade levels.
  • Must possess an understanding of the skills and processes outlined in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).ย 
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain high standards for self and students and present instruction in an interesting, creative, and innovative manner.
  • Must have knowledgeย of the Virginia Tiered System of Supports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with other staff toward the goal of increasing student achievement.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a resource to classroom teachers to help ELL students achieve academically in the classroom.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that yield increased English proficiency for ELL students.
  • Use language teaching strategies to increase English proficiency for students who speak a language other than English at home.
  • Advocate for the needs of the ELL students.
  • Administer the WIDA to students.
  • Evaluate the language needs of students whose families speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language support.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Communicate language needs and progress of the ELL students with classroom teachers, and families.
  • Lead meetings with teachers, students, and families to determine appropriate accommodations based on student WIDA scores.
  • Follow all federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and laws related to Title III and the Office of Civil Rights which pertain to the ELL program.
  • Utilize the online platform Elevation to manage the ESL program.
  • All other duties as assigned.
