What is an ESG research analyst?

ESG Research Analysts are professionals who evaluate companies and investments based on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. They analyze data related to sustainability, ethical practices, and corporate governance to assess how well a company manages risks and opportunities related to these areas. Their insights are used by investors, asset managers, and organizations to make informed decisions that align with responsible investing principles. ESG Research Analysts play a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in the corporate world.

How does an ESG research analyst typically collaborate with portfolio managers and other investment professionals?

As an ESG Research Analyst, you will frequently work alongside portfolio managers, analysts, and investment committees to integrate environmental, social, and governance factors into investment decisions. This involves preparing research reports, providing insights on ESG risks and opportunities, and participating in meetings to discuss how ESG considerations may impact the financial performance of various assets. Collaboration is essential, as your analyses help inform investment strategies and ensure that ESG criteria are aligned with the broader goals of the organization. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex ESG data into actionable recommendations are key to success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ESG research analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ESG Research Analyst, you need a solid understanding of environmental, social, and governance frameworks, strong analytical skills, and typically a degree in finance, economics, or sustainability. Familiarity with ESG data platforms, financial modeling tools like Excel, and certifications such as CFA or SASB FSA Credential are highly valued. Outstanding attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication skills help analysts interpret complex data and convey insights to stakeholders. These capabilities are vital for producing accurate ESG assessments that inform responsible investment decisions and corporate strategies.

  • Proxy voting controls: Perform due diligence and quality checks on ballot items, monitor vote cut-offs and support timely voting across accounts.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: Work with Calvert investment professionals, ESG research analysts, legal, compliance, operations, sales, marketing, RFP and other internal partners to support engagement, proxy voting, reporting and client-related deliverables.
  • Reporting and communications: Develop presentations, case studies, stewardship reports, board materials, thought leadership pieces and other content that communicates engagement and proxy voting trends, activity and outcomes to internal and external audiences.
  • Market and process intelligence: Monitor stewardship, corporate governance, regulatory and market developments and contribute to process improvements, data quality and workflow efficiency across the engagement and proxy voting program.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree, CFA progress or other relevant credential in finance, business, law, sustainability, public policy or a related field preferred.
  • Typically 3-6 years of relevant experience in investment management, ESG research, corporate governance, shareholder engagement, proxy voting, sustainability, investment research, public policy, consulting or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of responsible investment, stewardship practices, corporate governance and proxy voting; familiarity with asset management or institutional investor practices preferred.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information from corporate disclosures, proxy statements, sustainability reports, regulatory materials, investment research and third-party datasets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop clear, concise and persuasive materials for internal and external audiences.
  • High attention to detail and sound judgment, including comfort working with sensitive information, procedures, controls and deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively and follow through on deliverables in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative working style and strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to work across investment, research, stewardship, legal, compliance, operations and client-facing teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, and Tableau is required. Experience with data tools, automation, Power BI, Power Query, Python or AI-enabled workflows is necessary.
